btw, fading Nino years (which we will certainly have in early-mid 2027) can be pretty active tornado-wise in some of the same areas that are getting hit hard this year, so it would not surprise me at all if 2027 is above average and possibly way above average again. A few of those years on the top 10 list for Indiana were in fading Nino years (1973, 1992, 2024)
IND put out a statement confirming the tornado record has been tied in Indiana. Nice to see that my counting was accurate, lol.

There's an elephant in the room when you look at this list of top 10 years, and it's that 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 have all broken into the top 5. Combined with what's happening in Illinois, it will certainly add fuel to the debate over whether tornado alley is shifting. For the record, I don't really believe there is a bodily shift occurring with tornado alley, but I think it's always been bigger than what the old school/traditional "definition" was and recent years are helping to further demonstrate that.
I don't think we're going to keep breaking into the top 5 every year, but it makes you wonder whether this is some relatively short-lived blip or if something is changing with the climate that is enabling this increase in tornadoes in areas east of the Plains. If it's the latter, then there are definite societal ramifications to that given the overall higher population densities east of the Plains as well as the tendency for a greater fraction of tornadoes to be nocturnal. There's also better detection nowadays, which definitely plays a role in tornado counts. I would point out that 12/72 tornadoes in IN this year have been EF2+, which is almost 17%, which is a respectable ratio of EF2+ in this day and age.
