Now I do think a couple years of El Nino will help. The excessively warm WPAC has screwed with the MJO by sort of stealing the IO MJO phases this past winter. Once we snap back to La Nina, we'll have a cleaner slate to avoid what happened this past winter with the hope it's actually a +QBO.
But... my point was La Nina isn't exactly a driver of the warming we're seeing. It's the opposite. Global warming is increasing the frequency of La Nina. Maybe it's nature's way of balancing things.
It's an oscillation. They give each other heat. But El Nino releases it for most of the world to choke on, versus La Nina keeps it trapped in the WPAC subsurface. I think most of us would prefer the latter except select people who want some more snow in their backyards by making the rest of the world torch to push the troughing their way.
La Nina and -PDO were actually hiding some of the effects of global warming (not very well either). Now that it's getting released it's just going to become more apparent.
