AIFS showing the clear PV split this morning at 50 hPa, with the strongest lobe across Canada. It's no surprise to then see at 500 hPa a big arctic blast building. With high pressure on both coasts it would be coming south shortly, as you would expect in MJO phase 7.
06z GFS has something similar. System dives into california bringing some cold air and building snowpack and a good cold pool east of the Cascades. Hoping that could be consistent this winter like 2016/17
