There is a chance we could get to 70 F at my place today if clouds clear enough. It looks like 70+ every other day through Saturday. In fact, 75-82 F is probably where we will be for the next 5 days (after today). Completely unprecedented for late December. 2021 is the only year that was close.
The AI GFS shows a significant ice storm down here Jan 2-3. ECMWF actually has ice a few days later as well. Other model guidance is wildly different, but I do think freezing rain down here, or a blizzard further north are possibilities in that early January period.
But given how bad models have been days 10-15 lately I would advise not taking it too seriously!
00z UW-WRF 1.33km Sounding over PDX. Check that out. That is ominous seeing the 500mb to surface flow is aligned due southerly throughout the entire profile. Big time mixing potential violently transferring winds to surface.
