The removal of native grasslands combined with poor farming practices was a direct cause of the Dust Bowl and as a result intensified the extreme heat during the 1930s by reducing soil moisture and increasing surface heating. Going to take a long time to beat some of those records set back in that era, even as the climate warms.

Had the ridge not trended east, the earlier GFS runs likely would have come close to verifying, as doing so would have prolonged the heat and prevented convection from forming or moving into the area as early as it did. I'm sure we'll have more chances though as there's still plenty of summer left.
