The alternative to fake cold during inversion season is mild warm front drizzle, which is just as gloomy and screws up the snowpack even more. Warm + sunny isn't really a thing in the lowlands from late November to late January. If a ridge has to set up, I'd much rather at least get the colder temps and drier air. Having it appreciably cool off and feel like winter. Fake cold regimes correspond with offshore flow developing near the gaps as well, which can clear things out in outflow prone areas.

I think there's an appeal to a nice cold, dark, and foggy December day every now and then. Has a nice Christmas vibe to it in my opinion
