Yup. They were shooting on Kauai at the time, as I recall.

It's the wind shear and the tall mountains, Haleakala, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa that assist with that shear. El Ninos are when all bets are off as ocean temps rise and large amount of tropical development enhanced. It's going to be a long few months for the 50th state, I'm afraid.

It was hurricane footage from Iniki that was used in Jurassic Park.

That was Iniki in '92 on (9/11, ironically) . 2 weeks after Andrew hit Florida. Never really got the attention because of it. The eye went directly over Kauai. Leveled everything. Was on Oahu at the time..we got the backend SW's as it left 75-80mph and a ton of rain. There were wind readings on Kauai in the 200's, as I remember.
