NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center
ยท May 2024 Month-In-Review Thread
Summary:
1. 2nd most preliminary local storm reports
2. 4th most May tornadoes (2nd most Apr/May)
3. 8th most May watches
4. 2 violent tornadoes (Ends streak of Mays without a violent tornado)
5. Most Enhanced or greater severe weather risk days in a month.
- There were 6,284 total severe weather reports in May 2024. This is the 2nd most preliminary May severe weather reports on record (2004-present)
- May 2024 had the 4th most May tornadoes on record (1950 to present), and the most since 2019.
- The combination of April and May had the 2nd most tornadoes on record, only behind the historic year of 2011.
- There have been 930+ tornadoes through the first 5 months of 2024. This is the 4th most active start to a year on record and is near the 90th percentile for the last 25 year period.
- Not all tornadoes have been weak. In fact, more than 130 tornadoes have been rated EF2 or stronger with 32 EF3/EF4 tornadoes in the first 5 months of the year.
- Given the active pattern it is not surprising that May 2024 ended in the top 10 for total watches with 196.
- The total watch count for 2024 is running well above normal and is now on pace with some of the decades with the most number of watches (1990s and 2000s).
- There were 2 violent tornadoes in May 2024. This brought an end to the previous record streak of 4 consecutive Mays without a violent tornado.
- The SPC convective outlooks represented the busy pattern well with 22 days with an enhanced risk or greater which is the most for any month since late 2014 when the 5 tier category system was added at the SPC.
Not a cloud in the sky here. ECMWF showed this happening and was correct but still surprisingly given the roaring marine push yesterday evening and here it is just as beautiful as yesterday already.
