Guest happ
One take away from the Swain research article is that the recent cycle of extreme dry periods followed by very wet [AR-type] events may play out in the future. The Great Flood of 1862, like hurricane Harvey, may occur more often in the 21st century. 84/
Anti Marine Layer
Not quite as warm today and it looks like low clouds are making an early return.
Anti Marine Layer
Slow trough pattern will put an end to our pattern of faster moving troughs and ridges over the next week. May Gray becomes official a week from today.
Guest happ
Similar to yesterday, scattered stratus formation arrived well after sunrise and burned off shortly thereafter.
Guest happ
Though generally rainless, "baggy" troughs can be quite beneficial going into late spring/ summer. Case in point: July 2015 during El Nino conditions [soCal SST: 70's]. Due to "slow trough pattern", July max was 3 degrees below average w/ only 7 days in the 90's during an otherwise very warm summer. Anti Marine Layer
Warm anomalies soothe my soul. May highs are normally in the mid 70s by climatology, which is not unbearably hot for most people. However, a deep marine layer can keep it in the low to mid 60s in May. Guest happ
May 2014 was quite warm [mean: 72F] but generally it is a pleasant month [aver max: 77.5/ min: 58.5] here over the past 24 years. Summer has started in the desert already; can you imagine 90+ for the next 6 months? I don't know how they do it in Palm Springs. It is when my family members hibernate, some restaurants close down/ cheap hotel prices.

Anti Marine Layer
Low clouds are rather thin this morning. We still have not had a low temperature of 60 F or higher so far this spring at Fullerton Airport.

Anti Marine Layer
Temperatures in Downtown L.A. (66 F) are surprisingly cool for a sunny day in late April. Must be those below average sea surface temperatures.
Guest happ
Still running a tad above average this afternoon but it worked out well since I was drenched power spraying white fly off of hibiscus & aphids off gardenia. Avoid using pesticides when water works just as well but practically need to spray each leaf individually. 77/
Anti Marine Layer
Coast is below average and inland is above average, as is typical for weak high pressure in spring. However, Downtown L.A. was 70 and Fullerton was 77. Both are about the same distance from the coast, and both average around 74 for the high this time of year. Anti Marine Layer
Sea surface temperatures are just barely below average, but the sea breeze is steady and that's keeping it cool, despite a lot of sunshine. http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/sst/anomaly/2018/anomp.4.26.2018.gif

Anti Marine Layer
Low clouds are slow to arrive again tonight, which is fairly atypical considering that the marine layer is deepening and onshore flow is strong. However, we have not yet reached the peak of the gray/gloom season.

Anti Marine Layer
It should become quite winter-like by next Tuesday, the first day of May, with even the deserts cooling down significantly. More than just the typical May Gray. Downtown L.A. still has a little over 2 months to get 0.30" and reach 5.00" from July 1-June 30. Those sea surface temperatures really make a difference. 57-63° is awfully chilly; I've read complaints from surfers on a California weather blog. Just a few weeks ago sst were in high 60's. Wish I had a better knowledge of ocean currents/ upwelling.
Anti Marine Layer
Although temperatures are cool, it's quite easy to get a sunburn with the high sun angle. This can be especially annoying near the beaches with temperatures in the low 60s. I also remember end of school year beach parties (almost always cold and overcast) where I froze and ended up getting badly sunburned without seeing the sun a single time.
