There are some older Douglas Firs across the Mid Atlantic and Southeast brought over by those returning from the Oregon Trail. Most look anemic and riddled with problems, they they are both still alive and look better than a white pine.
I'm not surprised by the hearty varieties of palms out on this side of the Cascades, we are effectively a Mediterranean climate, maybe a touch cooler and wetter. There were Palms that I came across in Blackpool in the UK that were ~100 years old doing just fine.
