That stretch of generally warm winters out here 2016-24 was associated with low frequency variability in the IPWP structure & associated axisymmetric displacement of deep convection producing seasonally state-dependent pattern responses across the middle-latitudes. Tl;dr: warm anomalies were maximized during the summer in the West and during the winter in the East.
I believe that has inverted (and probably will remain as such until ~ the early 2030s) as the imbedded axisymmetric forcing elements have nearly reversed phase now (these modes of variability are on a lower frequency than ENSO & QBO/SAO).
Probably time for me to move to a cooler climate as I could barely handle the summers here before, and now we’re seeing 95-100+ weather in super niño onset summers like it’s nothing. Dreading 2027.
