Guest happ
The massive deepening of the marine layer did not happen. NWS Los Angeles was wrong and NWS San Diego was correct. It took all morning for NSW_LA to realize

Anti Marine Layer
Yes! It would be fun to have some monsoon thunderstorms west of the mountains, but the still cool sea surface temperatures will make it difficult. http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/sst/contour/californ.cf.gif http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/sst/anomaly/2017/anomp.7.3.2017.gif

Guest happ
There was a cell above the San Gabriel mts that drifted north toward Palmdale; don't know if it produced anything. Anti Marine Layer
Not much marine layer or monsoonal clouds this morning, so it's going to be a hot one, except at the beaches. Anti Marine Layer
7 years ago today it was very gloomy and rainy (not drizzly) with some areas getting over 0.10". The ground did not dry up until about noon. A very deep marine layer made it one of the coldest July days in history with Foothill Ranch only reaching 65 degrees. Lots of record low maximums were set for coastal areas that year. Not the same today.

La Ninas can be very good to California including cool summers. About 6 degrees below average, July 2010 was the coolest [mean: 72.3] at this location [23 yrs]. Guest happ
NWS_SF"Under this pattern expect Friday to be the hottest day of the week. Mos data for Paso Robles, which often is a good proxy for many of our interior valleys is up to 112 on the gfs mos for Friday afternoon. With a shallow marine layer along the coast under a strong ridge the beaches will likely remain cloudy/foggy with highs in the upper 50s for places like Pt Reyes and Ocean Beach. Thus during the peak heating of Friday afternoon we could see nearly 50 to 55 degree temperature spreads across our cwa or even within Monterey county." Anti Marine Layer
Palm Springs had a low of 90 F, and some places were worse than that. While there is some monsoonal moisture, the high is probably too strong for any thunderstorms.
