AMLO actually did a pretty good job as mayor of CDMX. But when he got national ambitions, he started playing the populist norm-breaker card big time. He tried to undermine the independence of the bureaucracy that runs Mexico's elections, and disregarded the norm (and I believe it may even be in the Mexican constitution) that a president remain neutral on the subject of his/her successor (Mexican presidents are allowed to serve only a single term). Also played the COVID denial card. And he did basically zip to make progress on crime and corruption.
Hopefully his successor will do better.
