The massive deepening of the marine layer did not happen. NWS Los Angeles was wrong and NWS San Diego was correct.

It took all morning for NSW_LA to realize

It would be fun to have some monsoon thunderstorms west of the mountains, but the still cool sea surface temperatures will make it difficult.

But aren't these readings close to normal?

Model guidance has been poor recently; every day is hotter than forecast. Hopefully this will actually be cooler than predicted.

Excessive Heat Watch, which is in effect from Thursday morning

* TEMPERATURES...ranging from 100-107 degrees. Overnight low
temperatures will remain in the 70s to lower 80s across warmest
  locations, especially in the foothills.

* IMPACTS...Very high temperatures may create a dangerous
situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Temperatures

They look pretty close to normal. It actually shows much warmer water in the Southern California Bight than other places along the coast. It just seems mornings have been a bit chilly for early July, but that might be because the last couple of summers, sea surface temperatures were well above normal.

I was surprised by how cool it was this morning but afternoons are too warm for my tastes.

The morning low yesterday was 47F! The coldest July low since 2010!

That must feel fantastic. Are the higher elevations surrounding Orcutt warmer at night?

Visible satellite shows  a disturbance well off shore that could produce thundershowers north of Pt Conception tonight; hopefully more monsoonal chances during the rest of the week.

Where did you get that satellite image from? Marine layer is quite extensive.

Mid to high clouds have decreased throughout the day. It is hazy again. I could see some towering cumulus clouds far away to the north.

There was a cell above the San Gabriel mts that drifted north toward Palmdale; don't know if it produced anything. It has been in the low 90's for past 3 days; hopefully it won't get too much hotter but triple-digits are forecast for Pasadena by Friday.

7 years ago today it was very gloomy and rainy (not drizzly) with some areas getting over 0.10". The ground did not dry up until about noon. A very deep marine layer made it one of the coldest July days in history with Foothill Ranch only reaching 65 degrees. Lots of record low maximums were set for coastal areas that year.

Not the same today.

Cool, literally B)

My records show 72/ 60 here w/ no rain. 2010 was the start of a wet period that peaked in 2011. La Ninas can be very good to California including cool summers. About 6 degrees below average, July 2010 was the coolest [mean: 72.3] at this location [23 yrs].

Not much marine layer or monsoonal clouds this morning, so it's going to be a hot one, except at the beaches. Morro Bay had a high of 58 F yesterday, but the ocean is a lot colder up there.

I looked up the readings for San Luis Obispo [12 miles inland]: 84° at university & airport. Amazing temp gradient.

"Under this pattern expect Friday to be the hottest day of the
week. Mos data for Paso Robles, which often is a good proxy for
many of our interior valleys is up to 112 on the gfs mos for
Friday afternoon. With a shallow marine layer along the coast
under a strong ridge the beaches will likely remain cloudy/foggy
with highs in the upper 50s for places like Pt Reyes and Ocean
Beach. Thus during the peak heating of Friday afternoon we could
see nearly 50 to 55 degree temperature spreads across our cwa or
  even within Monterey county."
