Showshoe WV is so windy it borders on unskiiable 30% of the time. I’ve been blown uphill more than once skiing western territory.
Last time we went up there a front blasted through with hurricane force winds and people were literally being knocked on their a**es in the village center where Cheat Mountain Pizza used to be.
Won’t lie it was hilarious to watch. People were also losing grip on their take-out/leftovers/etc so there were pizza slices and foam containers flying everywhere.
I've never skied, but I have heard that the snow conditions in the mid/southern Appalachians are pretty brutal. I am a very clumsy person, so skiing sounds like a recipe for disaster for me. I stepped on a skateboard once....only once I put one foot on the board, tried to get going, and the next thing I remember was staring at they sky as my head was bouncing off the pavement. I stuck to riding my bike. It was the 80's so of course I wasn't wearing a helmet.
Going back to my high school girlfriend's story, If I remember correctly, the conditions were especially icy, and the binding on her ski did not release, which made an already bad situation much worse.
