I worked with Mitsubishi and their failed attempt to make a Regional Jet. They set up their test flight program in Moses Lake, and I remember reading an article about the grocery stores there did not know what to get to satisfy the Japanese palate. Credit to them though, they were doing the research and trying to figure out what they should stock. I think there was a couple hundred Japanese employees and their families. We had Japanese folks in the office all the time and shared many a meal with them. I really enjoyed getting to know the culture.
Not sure if you ever experienced this having a Japanese wife, but I went to Nagoya to negotiate some contract amendments, and there are restaurants there that when a gaijin walked in they will cross their arms to make an "X" and say "NO!" then point back out the door. I did not experience that, but my boss (who I was traveling with) lived over there every other month for a month at a time for about 3 years had it happen to him several times. It was usually the little hole in the wall restaurants. We also went down a dark little side street with a few Yakuza run bars and pachinko parlors.
Our hosts took us out for a traditional dinner, and I got the drunkest I had gotten in a really long time that night. Started with Kirin, moved on to sake, then whisky and finished off the night with a plum wine. We had lots and lots of food. The restaurant was set up with the low tables and each table was in its own bamboo/paper walled room. One of our hosts almost fell through the wall when he stood up, he was so wasted LOL!
I also got to experience a Friday night, which was pretty amazing to witness.
The other funny thing, I am about 6'2" to 6'3" and about 270#, so of course I dwarfed most of the population there. We got to go on one of the test aircraft on the final assembly line, and they had a hell of a time finding a hard hat and slippers that would fit my size 12.5 feet.
