Growing up, my dad used the wood stove as the primary heat source, and used the baseboards in the rooms down the halls (mostly the kids' bedrooms) that didn't circulate as well. Warming the house during an extended outage was never a concern.
My house doesn't have a wood stove, but my setup is similar to Chewbacca's; gas furnace that takes very little generator juice, with plenty of power left to spare for.....luxuries. I would never own a home out here with electric as the only heating option.
Some years ago I think IWX, CLE, or somebody else ran the 1978 blizzard through a model using the initialization from a couple days out (so maybe 00z January 24 or something). The overall result wasn't too far off, though I think it underestimated the surface pressure by a decent amount. I guess that's not surprising.
