This one of my issues with snow, particularly in my area. I was told by a nws rep that 6 hrs measuring is not necesary!!!! Here snowfall and snow depth can be immensely different! Why? Because mby seldon get s-plus. Often its very light with long duration, thus it can settle faster than it falls! So compaction and settling is a huge issue! Measuring every 6 hrs on a cleaned off board almost always inflates numbers. But are they really inflated when one is measuring "snowfall" not snow depth? As I was also told by nws official if we asked for 6 hr measuring we wouldnt know how much snow falls in parts of Iowa!! Well, Ive been measuring by the book book since the early 1990s and am not about to stop! From a business point of view also. If we plow off 2" then 6 hrs later another 2" was a local inaccurate "snowfall" report of 3" a accurate reflection of how much work we did? No!!! In this business "snowfall" is all that matters!!! I saw this graphic from a nws office in pennsyvania today! THERE SHOULD BE MORE UNIFORMITY TO SNOW MEASURING!

Februaries 2006 and 2014 had pretty sexy arctic airmasses. And we'll pretend February 2015 didn't happen.

If we didn't luck out with some banding during the early/mid Jan storms, we'd have almost no snowpack in West or anywhere in the Yellowstone Caldera. Pretty wild.
