Today was a definite early June day and coolest since 5/24.  Stratus arrived after sunrise bringing cool air inland.

It is nice to finally have some classic spring days with the marine layer after the ridiculously hot May we just went through. As I have said before, years that had really hot spells in April and/or May often have a very nice June that is much more springlike.

Wholeheartedly agree.  The marine layer as our natural air conditioner and based on medium-range forecasts this week may see a lot of it.

Like an inside slider, this heat wave has been an inland event.

Several areas hit 110°:

Fresno, Coalinga, Wasco [111°], Bakersfield, Blythe [mostly in the San Joaquin Valley].

Stratus moving into the LA Basin could even produce drizzle in places tonight.

It wasn't as warm as predicted today, with highs in Orange reaching only the low 80's and cooled down quite quickly going into the evening. The marine layer came in while it was still daylight with stronger onshore flow, as opposed to last night when it came in late at night. It appears that typical spring weather will last through the remainder of the week.

Nice June pattern of troughs, strong coastal winds kicking up dust to the point of an advisory in the San Joaquin Valley; stratus slow to clear along the coastline.

June is behaving well if cooler more seasonal temps continue thanks to upper troughs w/ weak shortwaves mainly north.  Stratus is filling in fast across Santa Monica bay this early evening.  Like a blanket, it weakens the sun and then holds in the overnight warmth:

Strong onshore but stratus has been sort of weak considering the on-going trough of low pressure.  Cool airmass compared to last weekend.

Freeze watch on June 15!

NORTHEAST SISKIYOU AND NORTHWEST MODOC COUNTIES-MODOC COUNTY-

http://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=mfr&wwa=freeze watch

Richard was correct; there is a significant cool down across California this month.

Slightly cooler weather is forecast in Socal the next 2-3 of days with highs likely staying in the 70's in inland Orange County. The marine layer was beginning to come in just around sunset this evening. I think we are finally getting a fairly long stretch of typical spring weather now which started at the beginning of this month or late May. It has been perfect for outdoor activities over this last week.

I wonder if that Freeze Watch is for all elevations or just the highest areas.

Howard Sheckter of mammothweather.com earlier this month was predicting some chilly temperatures possibly near or below freezing for the Mammoth area right before Father's Day based on the forecast movement of the MJO. This is likely the same cool air mass that Richard was forecasting for this month.

Low pressure trough continues to cool temps to even below 100° in some low desert communities/ below 80° in valleys.  More of the same for at least another day or two.

Low pressure to the north is moving east while high pressure to the south moves into California.  Today was cooler than normal for another day.

It was quite breezy and cool today with very good air quality here in Orange. It actually was a bit cold last night with upper 50's late at night, as the sky remained cloud free late into the night allowing more radiational cooling to take place.

The forecast is for warmer weather at the end of this week and into the weekend with highs in the 80's as opposed to the mid-upper 70's that we have had lately.

Marine layer has been very irregular this month.  Maybe a strong inversion will form when temps warm up.

So far, June has been very pleasant unlike May; only a 10 degree spread in max temps at my location [78-88].  Could hit 90° this weekend.

First 90° for the month.  Ocean temps in low 70's Santa Monica bay makes for comfortable swimming.

Onshore flow has strengthened this evening as the overcast rolled here into Orange between 9 and 10 p.m., as opposed to being clear late into the night last night. A deeper trough may affect the region late next week possibly bringing some drizzle to coastal Socal if current model solutions pan out, but it is still too early to know for sure.

Dewpoints raising even in the low desert may signal that July is near.

Follow the stratus.  The air ocean temps fall slowly after sunset, tempered by the mild current [70°].  Further inland the lack of coastal clouds or late arrival [sometimes after sunrise] means cooler nights; warmer days.

Staying in a holding pattern typical for June; weak troughs to the north and stronger high pressure to the south.  I think the South is going to win next week.

It is certainly looking more like summer is going to start next week weather-wise. There is even a possibility for the first monsoonal activity of the year if the Four Corners High builds in just the right place. EDIT: The latest forecast has taken the high temperatures down just a bit for next week, but it still looks pretty warm leading up to the Fourth.

LONG RANGE OUTLOOK SATURDAY THROUGH NEXT TUESDAY...THE JET STREAM SHIFTS NORTH OVER THE NORTHERN PLAINS THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK...DISPLACED NORTHWARD BY AN EXPANSIVE RIDGE BUILDING OVER THE SOUTHWEST. THE RIDGE WILL BRING WARMER DAYS...A SHALLOWER MARINE LAYER AND LIGHTER MTN AND DESERT WINDS SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY. THE RIDGE BUILDS INTO A 595DM HIGH THURSDAY CENTERED OVER THE 4-CORNERS REGION. THIS PATTERN SUGGESTS A PERIOD OF HOT WEATHER NEXT WEEK WITH MAX TEMPS ABOVE 110 DEGREES IN THE LOWER DESERTS...AND HIGHS IN THE MID TO UPPER 90S IN THE INLAND EMPIRE. IF THIS 4-CORNERS HIGH MATERIALIZES IT WILL INCREASE THE POTENTIAL FOR SOUTHEASTERLY MONSOON FLOW TO DEVELOP. THE 12Z ECMWF DOES IN FACT HINT AT MONSOON MOISTURE ADVECTING INTO THE SOUTHWEST LATE NEXT WEEK.

Latest from San Diego AFD:

WE STILL EXPECT SOMEWHAT OF A PATTERN CHANGE FOR EARLY NEXT WEEK AS THE EAST-WEST ORIENTED UPPER RIDGE OVER NW MEXICO/EAST PACIFIC MOVES OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN US. THIS WILL BRING HOTTER WEATHER INLAND...WITH TEMPS OF 5 TO LOCALLY 10 DEG F ABOVE NORMAL POSSIBLE BY MON OR TUE. THE MARINE LAYER WILL BE BETTER CONTAINED TO COASTAL

AREAS MOST LIKELY...AND THERE WILL BE LESS WESTERLY WIND IN THE DESERTS. GFS/ECMWF/GEM KEEP THE MOISTURE TO OUR EAST/SOUTHEAST THROUGH AT LEAST THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK...WITH ECMWF HAVING SOME MONSOONAL MOISTURE POSSIBLE LATE NEXT WEEK. GIVEN THE STRENGTH OF THE MONSOON OVER MAINLAND MEXICO LATELY AND ABOVE NORMAL SST IN THE FAR EAST PACIFIC...WE COULD HAVE AN ACTIVE MONSOON ONCE THAT MOISTURE ARRIVES IN SO-CAL.

This summer could be more interesting than much of this past winter and spring once the pattern does get established.
