Looked back in the recordbooks a bit to see if we'd come close to any records... We won't (turns out that this sort of coolness was actually pretty commonplace in the early 20th century), but I noticed that on 6/22/1919, the maximum temp in Riverside that day was 102*F (2nd highest on record) and the minimum temp was 46*F (T-2nd lowest on record). Guess marine layer wasn't a thing that year.

I noticed this as well when going through Riverside's archived weather data (which is admittedly incomplete/has significant data gaps) as well as that of more established stations like that of Downtown L.A. and San Diego. Much cooler, even during the summer, up through roughly the 1960s. Lake Elsinore shows some bizarre data from the early 20th century, lows in the 40s were not uncommon during the summer months and at least once dipped to 39F during one August, while remaining in the 90s or even triple-digits during the daytime. Could also have been inaccurate/unreliable measurements from the time or faulty observations, I don't know. But, Southern California was definitely much colder in the early 20th century indeed (and a bit drier too, interestingly).

I created these graphs (and dozens of others) a few years ago, showing daily temperatures for Riverside and Lake Elsinore for certain years. Note the very wide temperature ranges compared to the warmer, more recent late 20th century years. Data obtained from the NDCC archives.

Reverse clearing happening this morning. Sky was clear when I woke up before sunrise; at sunrise the marine layer starting coming over the lower parts of the Santa Ana Mountains, and now late morning and the marine layer is hovering right over us and it's becoming less sunny.

NorCal and Oregon got the worst marine layer from this one.

Downtown LA's coldest June on record (for the avg. high) is becoming quite unlikely now, assuming the forecast for the last 7 days holds, but they will still probably be in the top 10 if not the top 5.

Lots of suspense though the first half of June.

Here's where Downtown LA averages so far, with 7 days to go.

Looks like 1981 was pretty nice.

2023 has been super cool this year. Here's the max temps for every month since 2000. The avg high for June is 71F here and the highest temp so far is only 71F.

It's redundant because this year is 2023. The weather has been redundantly cool too, although it looks like 77 F was reached for Downtown LA before the sea breeze push.

2023 will be known as the mini ice age for California
