I did a quick look back at the snow depth maps and the one that stands out is Dec '13...look how much snow was already OTG in Canada and Upper MW...we gotta fill up the snow holes across the southern Prairies of Canada (Manitoba & Saskatchewan) to really allow the cold the build up and bleed south... Today's snow Depth map... Dec '13...a very expansive snow pack and quite deep... Dec '14...pretty lack luster for anyone across the Sub... Dec '16 started off quite well over the lakes region and looks fairly similar to this years snow pack except for the Plains...

HRRR change from 00z to 12z is pretty big.
