  1. Amazing weather today, I think it was nature's gift to me for my 59th bday. Got pretty good conditions to climb Mount Hood, although the winds at the summit were around 40mph, forecast was calling for winds in the 20s which unfortunately did not verify. Here's a photo dump from our climb, sadly my camera fogged up little bit, so all of the photos are slightly blurry.

  2. It's ok bud, he isn't allowed into the United States, so he can't hurt you.

  3. We just had two weeks of much colder than normal weather including one of the coldest first weeks of March ever, had multiple minor lowland snow events, TONS of mountain snow AND still have 4 more stormy, cool days with feet of mountain snow to get through before the ridge. A week of nice, sunny, warm weather after that isn't hard to put a positive spin on.

  4. The new EuroAI is awesome. 360 hrs, 4 times a day and free on Pivotal. Next winter model riding is going to be AWESOME.

  5. Classy as ever. Not sure if you’ve managed to wrap your giant head around the fact that enjoying some nice weather doesn’t actually make the nice weather happen.

  6. 30 degrees currently here at timberline lodge, had a really nice sunset tonight.

  7. Hey @Phil... How's that ENSO transition looking? Any thoughts, any updates? Looking clean or messy thus far?

  8. The climate here is perfect in my book. Shoulder seasons provide storms and rain, summer is widespread sun without humidity and not that hot compared to the south, and winter provides ample snow chances. I love it. I understand this upcoming ridge is a little early and if it is prolonged I'll start to long for rain, but that doesn't mean I won't eat up the beautiful days.

  9. Day 9 of snow cover. The rain should take care of it this weekend.

  10. Definitely starting to look like potentially 7+ days of mid to upper 60s are on the table

  14. Fly to Anchorage and get a airbnb near valdez. 6hr drive.

  15. Doing everything i can to try and make this trip happen to valdez, They look to get crushed in that area with storm after storm. Should be fun. About 4-5 days should do it and be enough time to avoid the heat wave here.

  16. One more day of early runs and then we wait an extra hour. Luckily that just puts the ECMWF back to finishing by 11 p.m. instead of midnight like it would have been without the upgrade.

  17. Beautiful day here. 58/29 spread with morning frost, then high clouds and lots of afternoon sun. Looks like PDX hit 60, of course. 59/30 day at VUO.

  18. Another beautiful day today. PDX made it up to 60. Moisture arrives tomorrow but things start drying out by Wednesday. Warmer and sunny weather arrives on Thursday.

  19. The PNW has a pretty awesome climate but the one cool thing we lack is severe thunderstorms. Like one that produces hundreds or thousands of lightning strikes instead of a half dozen.

  20. I'll take the bullets. I got my plot of land here and will keep it till I die. His worry about a grave summer isn't unfounded given the last decade here and an early ridge can bring PTSD, so I get it.

  21. I’m only 2 meters tall not 7 ft. But you might have me confused with someone else. Definitely not an angry person. You sure you aren’t freaking out about the seasons turning. You seem a little on edge today.

  22. A bit of a surprise snow this morning in Omaha… probably picked up an inch or two of snow here, nothing at all like what our friends out west are getting this morning however it’s nice to see at least some moisture here. Roads are mostly wet here, however the grass and rooftops are mostly covered.

  24. WxBell has added the ECMWF AIFS. Runs 4X/day and goes out to 360hrs. Interested to see how it performs compared to the operational ECMWF HRES and EPS.

  27. We had Certa Pro do some interior painting a couple years ago and they did a decent job. I went with them because they had a guy who was able to fix some water damage for time and materials and everyone else I talked to said I would have to find someone to do that work. I got a bid from Certa Pro for my exterior but ended up going with “a guy with a truck” because he was less expensive and came recommended from someone I trust. He and his team did a fantastic job- pressure wash, scrape, caulk, primer, two coats of paint. House looks great. I can DM you his contact info if you’re interested. Not sure he will go to Everett but only one way to find out.

  29. House got painted today. Just in time since exterior painting is ill advised with ambient temps above 90.

  32. There's a ton of evidence for positive feedbacks accelerating summer warming in this region. But the pace of warming over the past 10 years is pretty wild -- 1.5 C warmer than any previous decade (using upper-air obs which go back to the 60s, not sure how the 1930s obs compare). In my opinion, nobody knows how much we might fall back in a subsequent decade when there is a shift. Will we retain 0.5 C of summer warming? 0.75 C? 1.0 C? None at all? Or it could stay as warm as it has been or get even warmer.

  33. What data is that? Plenty of evidence it’s a quasi-stable mode of inter/intra-decadal variability, sure, but probably not a “new normal”. Though it sure can feel like it while it’s happening. Imagine how people felt during the 1930s dustbowl. Summer after summer after summer of unprecedented heat and dryness that seemed to build on itself. Refused to abate until the default IPWP/z-circulation finally changed in the 1940s. Then suddenly, it was over!

  35. NOAA should sell the GFS to IBM or something. Free/public access to data is nice in theory, but there’s zero chance any NCEP project will compete with private sector juggernauts like the ECMWF.

  36. The AIFS is already out on tropicaltidbits and pivotal too. It looks like the upgraded EURO AI version is already better than the IFS and GraphCast. It has the highest 500 hPa anomaly correlation scores and the lowest root-mean-square error for 2 m temperatures. https://www.ecmwf.int/en/about/media-centre/aifs-blog/2024/first-update-aifs
