Just for grins, I thought I’d post one of our infamous quakes in West Texas- just in time for the holidays.
Note: No one reported feeling it. 🤠

Merry Christmas from Texas!

Also:

‘A small earthquake was detected late Thursday in Denton County.

The 2.2-magnitude earthquake struck shortly before midnight near Northlake, a small town about 45 miles northwest of Dallas, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. No immediate reports of damage have been made, as earthquakes in the 2.0 range on the Richter scale are considered minor.”

The U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck near Anamizu, in the country's coastal prefecture of Ishikawa, causing power outages and transportation disruptions.

A Tsunami warning was issued in Japan’s West coast with 4’ waves expected.

A quick succession of dozens of earthquakes struck Japan’s main island of Honshu today – the worst being a 7.6 magnitude that hit at 4.10pm local time.

The quakes triggered urgent tsunami alerts, with officials warning that waves could be as high as 16ft in some places.

Already waves of 3ft have been battering parts of Japan's west coast.

The worst affected areas are Toyama, Ishikawa and Niigata, which are now at risk of facing landslides and collapsing houses.

At least six people are buried under the rubble, the government said, adding that the army had been deployed to aid rescue efforts.

After the 7.6 quake in Japan strong aftershock potential remains. Japan continues to do recovery of the victims.
A rare rescue 5 days after the heavily damaging quake saved an elderly woman.
Now winter weather is closing in and recovery and cleanup is hampered with many still unaccounted for.

Geologists are on watch for a strong aftershock in the 5 range.

Heard a news report from Japan this morning  on the recovery.
The central west coast continues to battle debris, and issues with clean water and power.
This will be a very long road to rebuilding and even longer to thrive.   There continues to be missing and dead.

No nation is better equipped mentally or spiritually than Japan when it comes to rebuilding.
No riots or looting. People wait quietly to refill their water containers.  It’s impressive.

There remains a concern for more aftershocks or even a secondary slip. Let’s hope the oceanic fault is settled and remains quiet.

Information still streaming in.  It has been assigned a preliminary size of 4.8 and 2.9 miles in depth. Shallow enough to rattle the dishes.

USGS expects an aftershock in the 3.8 range.  They haven’t had a sizable quake for about 140 years.

Time was ~10:40am est. Depth 2.9 mi

A powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred in the South Pacific Ocean near the coast of  Peru Fri, Jun 28, 2024 05:36 GMT.

The quake had a very shallow depth of 28 km (17 mi) and was felt over a large region. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.

Nice thread. I don't think CA gets earthquakes anymore like they used to?

…For now, lol. They are supposedly overdue for a big San Andreas quake though.

The really scary scenarios for the PNW are the Cascadia subduction zone, and the shallow local faults like the Seattle Fault. Those ones don’t cause earthquakes very often but the geological record suggest that when they do, they could be disastrous.

It looks like this eruption should be smaller than what was thought back when you posted this. It was thought then that this eruption might rival the climate impact that the 1783 eruption had (it lowered global temps by -1.3*C), but that thankfully looks to increasingly not be the case.

A little global cooling wouldn't hurt though.

In fact the more they find out about the Seattle fault the more dire they consider the situation.  They think this area is being slowly compressed by the movement of the Juan de Fuca plate.  Seattle sits on one small chunk of plate left over from a plate that previously got subducted under the North American plate.  When the Seattle fault has a quake that small chunk of plate can rise several feet or even on the order of 20 feet in one quick shot.  It doesn't take too much imagination to see what the implications of that could be.

So...this area has one of the most dangerous volcanos in the world and one of the most dangerous earthquake potentials.  The fact the Seattle fault has never been locked as long as present in the known earthquake record makes it even worse.  It is possible part of that could be due to the isostatic rebound from the last ice age being less of a factor now.  One thing you have to say about this region is the geologic history is insanely complex and interesting.

Jeez, that’s scary.

It would be like the Christchurch earthquake but worse because a lot more people live in Seattle. Pioneer Square would be destroyed.

The one good thing is that the Seattle viaduct is no more now, and I think some bridges have been retrofitted for earthquakes in recent years. A lot of the new construction would be safe too.

But yeah there is still a lot of unreinforced masonry in Seattle. Not to mention that ground liquification (liquefaction?) would be a huge problem, and I’m pretty sure there’s no defense against that.

Not to mention the Earth is flying through space at thousands of miles per hour while it's alive under our feet.  It's amazing more stuff doesn't go wrong than what does.  It's all so precarious.  That is why I laugh when people get all freaked out by something as small as a 1 inch sea level rise in a century.  Just chicken feed in the overall scheme of things.

It’s been 10 inches over the past century, not one. And it will almost definitely be a good deal more than that over the next century.

But yeah, it is crazy when you think about it all like that. Plate tectonics is especially weird—hard to wrap my mind around how the continents will one day be in completely different places.
