Thunder98

The pulse that hit T98 is still going strong, marching up the central coast through SLO and beyond. Might even make it to Monterey, or fire something off in the Central Valley.

Otherwise, little or no spillover west of the mountains.

High 77 here, though it’s crashed hard now that the breeze is whistling through my window screens.

Hope there's no dry lightning.

Inversion still strong, so for the umpteenth time, don’t expect full clearing at the beaches. Already a spread of around 8 degrees between the exposed beaches and more sheltered ones.

No instability to mix out the marine layer locally = 10 degrees cooler at the immediate coast than yesterday. There’s some very juicy air residing over northern Mexico, but the flow is probably steering it well to the south and east.

“While the [high and middle level] clouds look impressive on satellite…forecast stability values do not suggest a very unstable atmosphere.”

Translation: Nice backdrop but don’t expect any pop up showers or storms west of the mountains. More of the same today — should remain hot away from the coast, with onshore flow strong enough that some beaches may not clear. It’s another one of those mornings where it’s sunny and nice here, but the fog is lingering just off the coast and could blow back in any time.

101F was the peak around the time of that post. Steep decline shortly after that.

Minute-by-minute temperature graph of my weather station over the past three days (including today through 5:30 PM). Note the typical temperature peaks in the afternoon between 1 and 3 PM. Today it happened after 4 PM, which is rather rare. Also worth mentioning that today was actually cooler around noon and the early afternoon than during the previous several days, but then it just kept getting warmer when the temperature would usually level off. Not sure what happened.

EDIT: Wind might have had something to do with it. Sea breezes were weaker today at my location  until just after 4 PM, finally kicking in right when the temperature turned around.
