We are off to a better start for the rainy season than last year, although the mid-October storm was limited to mainly Southern California.

One more day of a deep marine layer before we get a brief weak Santa Ana event. After that more rain is likely late next week, but as usual models cannot agree on the strength of the storm.

The weather is very May-like today, with reverse clearing and dark clouds that bring nothing but drizzle.

Midweek storm could be pretty wet, but it's still 4 days out and a lot can change. Hoping for some significant rain so we don't have fires (the kind that are not delightful) through Christmas again.

High clouds have thickened up quite a bit. It was warm midday, but temperatures quickly dropped now.

Although the sunset should be at 4:42 PM today, the top of Saddleback had sunlight on it until about 4:46 PM, so it must have been a strange enhanced atmospheric refraction situation. In addition sunset times are for sea level, so I don't know how much effect the elevation has.

The Hills around here had a slight greening from the light rain last Wednesday. And its going to be much greener in the coming days

Downtown L.A. has 1.96" since October 1 as of 6 PM tonight. Compare that to 0.11" last year.

The final rain totals for this month is 1.83". Which is above the average of 1.34" and is 136% of average. Wettest November since November 2008.

Nice rainfall totals with this last storm. Lake Forest was 1.10" and Fullerton Airport was 1.19". Downtown L.A. was just short of an inch with 0.98". Hope that's enough to end the fire danger for awhile.

More rain expected by midweek. After a very wet second half of November, most of California has become close to their normal rainfall totals up to this point of the water year, with a few over 100%. Until then, 3 more days with nothing to write about.

A year ago today the Santa Ana Winds which brought the big fires started. They started off as a cold Santa Ana, which usually reduces the fire risk, but the Thomas Fire started anyway.

Opaque clouds were right along the horizon today at the time of sunset. About 95% of the sky was clear except for the area where the sun was setting. That messed up the view of the earliest sunset.

17 days remain until the shortest day, on which sunset will be about 4 1/2 minutes later and sunrise about 12 minutes later.

Here's a nice view from about 4 minutes after sunset with the shadow of the cloud visible in the eastern sky.

Very disappointing storm so far. All we got is about an hour of light to moderate rain early in the morning. Now it's just cloudy with occasional sprinkles.

 

However, there was a double rainbow this morning, which I will put up later.
