What they did was not right.

Brings up a good question though: If a conservative family member and an LGBTQ activist you never met before were both drowning and you could only save one of them, which one would you save?

What a bizarre question. Just for openers, if I never met them before, how would I know they were an LGBTQ activist?

It's called clown range for a reason.

I will remember this downvote if you die in a plane crash because the pilot has a grand-mal seizure or if you are in a dire life-threatening situation and the ER puts you on a queue because there is a Black, transgender overweight patient with a much less severe emergency who gets treated first because of their intersectionality score.

The demon inside me did that downvote.

Well tonight we will get the first real indication of how much of my party is still controlled by MAGA Republicans and how the rest of this race may shape up. Obviously Trump will win tonight but by how much? Is it historic margins or just a decent-sized amount? Does Haley make second? If so, does DeSantis drop out?

We finally start moving away from polls and punditry to actual results. I'm fearing the worst but trying to remain optimistic we can somehow still escape a Trump/Biden rematch.

I've seen a few stories about lots of Republicans in Iowa actually being anti-Trump, but they are afraid to vote for anyone else out of fear of threats/scorn/ridicule from Trump supporters.  So the results very likely won't reflect the true opinion of Iowa voters, but it will certainly be spun that way.

Voting is a private decision for most people.

100% of the vote in for Johnson County, Iowa and Haley is beating Trump by 1 vote. That is the only county keeping Trump from claiming victory in all 99 counties.

A token win or a harbinger of things to come?

No chance Haley, a renowned warhawk and neocon, has a shot. Terrible candidate who is polling 30 points behind in her home state.

I think I've mentioned before that my county (Johnson) is probably the most leftist in the whole state because of Iowa City here being a university town. Tells you all you need to know. But my mostly rural precinct was a landslide for Trump.

Texas "physically barred" Border Patrol agents from trying to rescue migrants who drowned, federal officials say

Right off you're posting the deaths of a few people because of others trying to have some border security, but you fail to mention the many, many deaths from fentanyl poisoning, and human trafficking and possibly slave labor, which is a result of open borders. Not to mention potential terrorists etc coming through as well. But I think any human death and suffering is no bueno!

Iowa's youngest and most liberal county. Pretty big outlier in Iowa but I'm hoping it speaks well for future results from blue states.

Lol.  She knew it was slavery.  She's not an idiot.

She also knows the Confederacy culture is strong and the answer "slavery" is reductive....at least to the people who fly the Confederacy flag.

Fault her for being a typical politician pandering to the far right GOP folks who vote in the primaries.

But don't fault her for being dumb. Your Dear Leader roundly takes that crown.

Well, sure they have.

And US foreign policy is one reason for this. For most of the Cold War, it read like an MML rant: every politically progressive movement was seen as Marxist this or Communist that, and any scoundrel on the right who was willing to use force to suppress such movements was deemed worthy of aid, no matter how corrupt or how awful his methods.

Probably the best president to turn away from that dismal history was Bill Clinton, whose standard was that so long as those countries stuck to minimum democratic standards, the USA would let the process play out.

His wife unfortunately, and the man who hired him to be his Secretary of State, did not share these standards. Honduras was actually doing OK-ish until Obama and Hillary destabilized the left-leaning populist government there. After a few years, it became the No. 1 source of migrants fleeing to the USA.

So much of this, in other words, is chickens coming home to roost. I would have respect for Texas if they included this in their criticism. (It shouldn't be too hard, Hillary Clinton, a bete noire of the right, played a role in it.)

But instead it's mostly the same xenophobic garbage that was responsible for the St. Louis being sent back. (And if you don't know what I am talking about and had to summon Google, it sort of proves my point about people operating from a state of historical ignorance.)

So far as emptying prisons, in many cases the actual situation is 180˚ from that. The USA has long had a process of emptying its prisons into Central American countries. That has already destabilized the flawed but still relatively open and free democracy in El Salvador into becoming a dictatorship (next comes corruption, then comes economic stagnation, then comes more migrants).

It's mainly chickens coming home to roost, and they will continue to do so, so long as Americans play the role of dumb herd animals and respond to the rhetoric of their manipulators so predictably.

Good points in here. But I grew up with this culture heavily represented in my neighborhood and my last name is Hispanic.  My husband is 1/2 Spanish 1/2 Irish from S. Az.  I grew up in a heavily Hispanic populated community in Ft. Worth. (Heard of the Ft WOrth Stock Yards? That was home for 25 yrs.) Massive Hispanic community.
I have 2 Hispanic Dem. Mayors in ‘me familia’ and a cartel murdered cousin.

We know the picture - I assure you

I burden to the reader to establish that I know the good and ill that this invasion creates.
It is poorly engineered and maintained.  The good is hard working family seeking peace and jobs.  The ill is the crime and drugs, death, pain and loss.  We’ve yet to reap the later on the level it can reach.  Significant potential.

Texas isn’t trying to be a bunch of hateful rednecks standing at the border, rifles raised like the new Alamo.  It’s trying to control the flow and know who the hell is entering our nation.
Texas, Arizona, and California are all trying to control an increasingly impossible situation while paying the bill the Federal government won’t.
We MUST know WHO is entering and control the numbers.
We’ve only begun to see the fall out from this. It will go on for decades.
I “Shure as Sh*t” haven’t seen it in a long lifetime and No One can say how much crime and death from fentanyl and violence will follow. No One.

There’s a good deal of bad with the good.  Either way, the bill and impact belongs to the next generations.
My Latino relatives are very concerned as they understand fully the elements not being identified and turned away at the border.  I paid my bill when I buried a cousin.
We have no border - period. Full stop.
The bill will be un gran-bastardo!  Del Final.

Now go back to your solutions.  Just wanted to toss in some long vision here. I know how this will play out.  And should others not, -they will.

Y'all need to put this false talking point to rest.  Drugs are not usually smuggled through illegal immigration.  The vast majority are going through ports of entry.

Quote

The U.S.-Mexico border extends 1,954 miles, spanning four states and about 26 land Ports of Entry (POEs). CBP must interdict illicit substances across this vast and sometimes rugged expanse, both between and at POEs. CBP data indicates most illicit drug substances are smuggled through POEs, contrary to common belief that they are smuggled between ports of entry, particularly in areas without fencing or other physical barriers. The data also indicates that most illicit fentanyl encountered by CBP is smuggled through POEs at the southern border

For all the celebrating and coronations MAGA wants to do today for their King Emperor, it should still be noted that half of voters in extremely conservative Iowa voted for someone other than Trump. This goes to show there is a real appetite within the Republican Party to try and move on from his cancer, no matter how much MAGA wants to make it seem like any Republican who doesn't vote for Trump is just a RINO.

Whether it will ultimately matter in a broken primary system where extreme candidates always do better than they should, who knows. But it's heartening to see none the less.

MAGA candidates sure but almost 30% of that was not Trump which is an important caveat. I'm not saying that 50% non-Trump vote will go to Haley but, again, it shows there is an appetite within the party for someone other than Trump. It's nice to know my party has not been completely overrun by diehard Trump supporters who put their Lord and savior above beating Biden.
