March 2019 Weather Discussion in the PNW

BLI snowman

Recommended Posts

The Eastern half of the CZ has set up just North of Everett, but looks like the Western part is reorganizing and moving in a little further South toward about Mukilteo.

I bet it starts snowing here in the next half hour or so.

Looks like the Randy Effect is negatively impacting your chances.   He is pulling the entire band northward and away from you.    <_>

I already lived through that band. Some very heavy stuff.

And its way more intense now than it was back then.

I would not be surprised if there was thundersnow up there.

The WRF gives Arlington a foot of snow tonight. Not much South of Everett though.

This winter has kinda cemented in me how cool the Puget Sound’s unique weather is.

You had 52 inches?

I had more snow than they did... but they have not even touched freezing for over a month now.    So that makes a big difference.

What an absolute pity that it hits at a pretty good time for the Sound, and at such a terrible time for us.

Randy... are you in Snohomish or Skagit County? Trying to pinpoint you on the radar.

About 1 mile from the border on the Snohomish Co side. Coming down hard. Deck already has a half inch of new snow.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Missoula had about the same amount this winter!

Well...I only had 0.4" of snow going into February. It can be pretty feast or famine up here as you can see by my signature.

Of the 86.4" I've had the past two winters 85" of it came in February or March. So we are kind of due for some more snow in December or January. December 2012, 15, 16 had some decent snow in December, about 10" in each of those years, but I have never had a huge snow month in December.

The cold onshore flow doesn't usually seem to get cranking until the 2nd half of the winter many years, most notably about Mid-February. 8 years is still a pretty small sample size, but it has been pretty dramatic during that period. This is the 3rd year in a row the February 15 - March 7 period has been dominated by cold onshore flow and seen significant snowfall.

Wow. Enjoy it.

I'm just South of the CZ for now and I don't see much reason to expect it to drop South enough to give me more than a couple inches at this point.

Might have to take a drive to Arlington though tonight. It's less than 20 miles from here.

Yeah I definitely prefer my climate over yours(except this February, because it's been unusually cold). I think ideally something like Seeley/Swan valley but slightly warmer + more fall precip would be great even better.

I'm sitting between Arlington and Granite Falls in the red zone shown on the WRF map.  If it snowed as hard as it was here earlier I believe the 12-16" it shows could happen.  Randy is actually a bit north of the red zone, he's in the purple I believe haha.  A good night to watch the radar.

The beauty of the CZ on full display. It’s agonizing when you see a beastly CZ 20 miles north of you but for those times it’s right over you it is an awesome experience. Bittersweet.

It’s not luck it’s location :)

Wish there were an equivalent down here in terms of unpredictability. The vast majority of stuff seems to underperform with only a very select amount of exceptions.
