Christmas Blizzard 12/20 - 12/28

This so reminds me of the due S to N stream of moisture that fed the Halloween 1991 MN Bliz! I remember seeing radar shots on news channel looking like this and the coma head right over MSP.

We have a very slight coating of ice here after some freezing drizzle for the past hour or two. NWS has us under a Winter Weather Advisory for 2-6 inches and up to two tenths of ice. A Blizzard Warning is in effect just two counties to my west for 7-17 inches. So dang close!

Snow should pickup just in time for Christmas morning tomorrow. If all goes right we will have snow falling while we open gifts, eat good food, and enjoy each other's company. Maybe go outside a build a snowman with the kids. Honestly can't complain, it's perfect timing and I will be happy to take my lesser amounts!

Up before the kids are and we have... Freezing rain with a solid coating on everything. That's not a good sign. Models that had us receiving a couple inches had it starting off as snow and turning to freezing rain this afternoon. Models that had us with very little/nothing started as freezing rain. Surface temp is 28 and the 7AM update showed 925mb temps being - 4c, which is where the snowier models about had it at this time. There must be a very skinny layer of warm air just above the surface. Areas just 20-30 miles to my SW are showing snow on radar under some heavier precip so maybe that could help as precip rates increase across the area. At this point I don't even care about accumulation, just give me some snow falling please!

Either way it shakes out though, it's Christmas and it will be an amazing day no matter what! Merry Christmas everyone!!

Finally changed over to snow/ sleet here about an hour ago… and the ground is starting to get covered with some white gold.

The kids are going to be extra excited when they get up as they wanted a White Christmas and it looks like they will get one this year!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Congrats!  It's wild to see that on the radar the rain/snow line is right on the IA/NE state border..you ain't kidding when you say that OMA is always riding the fine line.  Enjoy the snow on this Christmas morning...it's a memory your kiddos will have for a long time.

@gabel23 is it ripping out by you?  I think your a bit farther west... @jcwxguy how about you?  Looks like some heavy snowfall rates right about now...

@CentralNebWeather, how much do you have OTG?

1.0-1.5”, but little drifts of a couple inches. About to ramp up in just a few minutes.

This has been one heckova Manifestation of a Christmas Blizzard down the final stretch...its an impressive storm that will cycle through at least 2 more times before Winter looses its grip.  Can you imagine the potential to see this in FEB?  Hint hint...maybe a Valentine's day Monster?  Ok, ok...let's not get ahead of myself...enjoy the show that Mother Nature delivered on this wonderful holiday!  ❄️☃️
