March 2019 Weather Discussion in the PNW

When it finally starts raining here... the trees are going really fill out and the leaves are going to open up.   Most of the trees in our yard now have small leaves (even the alders) but they still don't look too green from a distance.  I love the first rain after a dry, warm spell in the spring because everything jumps ahead.

Looks like that will wait until Wednesday up here... with plenty of rain to follow.   By next weekend it should look much more lush around here.

I haven't noticed any trees leafed out. Just budding. I was shocked by Tim's pics from tropical North Bend. But to be honest I don't pay much attention. It's spring, the trees .leaf out...Happens every year.

Seems like the cottonwoods had some visible green on them. But yeah like you said, pretty normal.

Shocked?

Issaquah is farther ahead than North Bend.    Here is a cam from the Issaquah Highlands at about 900 feet...

It is what it is... you mock it like its not really happening.

Nobody said it was ahead of schedule.   I am just surprised that we are even close to normal given the cold and snow we had for 6 straight weeks.

Yes.

Started hitting snow along the road above Salmon Falls (about 1,100’) There was some snow on the Henline Falls trail around 1,600’ but it was doable. Then we drove up to the Jawbone Flats/Opal Creek trailhead. A foot or more there.

Yeah. I was happy to see no trace of the yearly mob scene there, fortunately. I think the Forest Service is starting to regulate use more.

They are which I have mixed opinions about too. I don't like it when we start regulating who can and cannot access public lands. I would prefer they improve infrastructure and/or publicize other great under utilized places to spread out the crowd.

People are messy and ruin things so they have to protect special areas from that.

The second two would be great if they had more funding. Otherwise some regulation is a necessary evil I suppose. It is the preferred alternative to seeing places either get completely trashed or have them privatized.

I don’t use the stock weather app. I use Wunderground. Tells you when it will rain, to the hour. For a day or two, it’s definitely useful.

Wunderground also allows you to look at a map of weather stations in your area.

Of course, I trust weather models even more, and all of them suggest a rainy early April.

Certainly looks like we will turn a corner as we enter April, judging by the 12z runs.

A wet week is pretty much inevitable. It would be really strange for it not to happen at this point. Can't wait to see how much more spring progresses this week. Actually looking forward to some rain. It will also be interesting to see if we continue the cycle of focused wet periods and ridging in between as we move into the warm season.

But for this weekend... I am just enjoying our mythical ridge that was not going to happen. :)

This April is starting to look like last April...well might be a overstatement last April was record wet it would be surprising if we matched last April this year. Plus we only have an idea of what the first week of the month may look like at this point. Could end up being mostly dry like this month but hopefully not.

Very interesting stretch of weather we have had after the record cold for about 40 days we’ve had nearly 20 days above average temps. Not very much above average fairly close but still just a flip of the script. It’s been nice having all of this warmer weather recently.

It’s worth noting that Seattle and Puget Sound was only record wet last April because they got an unusual AR on 4/14 that dumped 1.70” on SeaTac.

That AR missed Portland entirely. We ended up with precip slightly above normal at 3.34”.

There wasn’t a single official station in the region that was record wet last April.

I have summoned a stressed out genie! ‍♂

Yourself? That is true. You are always stressed.

I am loving this weather and the rain coming... the lack of rain has been stressing me out a little.

Jesus fu@&ing Chri$t Tim. It DOES happen every year. Lol

There would be no point in discussing anything ever if we could only talk about the things that have never happened before.

The part about getting giddy about frost when it happens every year... or excited about rain or fall colors?

Yeah. That was crazy.
