wx_statman
A short video of our snowfall on December 8th last winter. This was the "opening shot" of our winter, the first frozen precip event for Portland. Video shot at the beginning of the event at noon (you can hear the church bell at the start of the video). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clYf9Lj-ZyU

Guest happ
Thanks wx_statman for the reminder of a great winter. There's sort of a contest going on a California site over when the Tioga Pass will be cleared. Here are photos of recent conditions in Yosemite.

Phil
A few pictures I took while on my roof today, trying to increase the height of my anemometer. To highlight the futility of my wind speed issue, I'm about 60ft off the ground (three story house) and that huge tulip poplar is still towering at least 100ft above my head. It's just a hopeless endeavor. http://i724.photobucket.com/albums/ww243/phillywillie/Mobile%20Uploads/8CDD04AD-8A86-4A60-8F60-EEE964AE794F_zpsab5sllsb.jpg Quote Live Weather Cam: https://www.youtube.com/live/KxlIo8-KVpc?si=xKLCFYWbZieAfyh6 PWS Wunderground https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KMDBETHE62 PWS CWOP/NOAA: https://www.weather.gov/wrh/timeseries?site=F3819&hours=
Phil
View looking the other way, for a height perspective. Can see the Virginia bank of the Potomac River Valley (which includes Booze Creek) rising up in the distance, given the leaves are now falling off the trees. http://i724.photobucket.com/albums/ww243/phillywillie/Mobile%20Uploads/43655A7B-AFA8-48D8-B355-F0A2342CF87D_zpszgzqgmlo.jpg Quote Live Weather Cam: https://www.youtube.com/live/KxlIo8-KVpc?si=xKLCFYWbZieAfyh6 PWS Wunderground https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KMDBETHE62 PWS CWOP/NOAA: https://www.weather.gov/wrh/timeseries?site=F3819&hours=

It wouldn’t be fair to say the winds at my house were X while measuring more than 20 meters up. wouldn't beI think of it more like "the wind I would experience if the trees weren't blocking it". I'm not even talking about those treetops well up above 150ft..just regulation height for anemometers which is 10m above the ground. Unfortunately, there are just too many massive trees here to get accurate wind readings at 30ft up. Some of the trees here are over 160ft tall (the tulip poplar in that picture is exactly 167ft according to laser measurement, and it lost its top back in the 1980s). So I have the anemometer up at 60ft, where it's still blocked by trees but more accurate than it would be at 30ft. Phil
Though in big windstorms sometimes it doesn't matter and the wind just punches right through the trees. Was strong enough last year to shake people's cars so hard that their alarms were going off. Unfortunately, that event cut power to my station before I could get any good wind readings, but I'm guessing they were easily over 60mph, judging by the roof/shingle damage. Color is pretty pathetic this year, minus a few random trees. The warm/dry autumn didn't help, and last weekend's cyclone ripped off a bunch of leaves that hadn't yet peaked. http://i724.photobucket.com/albums/ww243/phillywillie/Mobile%20Uploads/2F472BB8-DDDA-4A50-9A33-2BD446AF78D3_zps6jg1ip8b.jpg Quote Live Weather Cam: https://www.youtube.com/live/KxlIo8-KVpc?si=xKLCFYWbZieAfyh6 PWS Wunderground https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KMDBETHE62 PWS CWOP/NOAA: https://www.weather.gov/wrh/timeseries?site=F3819&hours=
