November 2016 Observations & Discussion

Its gonna be a mild one coming up this week as temps soar in the 50s to near 60. Sweet for this time of the year and also a bonus to decorate Christmas lights outside . Only thing is that wet weather moves with it. Hopefully, at times, there will be some dry slots.

I'm feeling the chill out here!  Morning low in the mid 40's with a heavy overcast and first significant mountain snows.  A stark change from where we have been all month long.  I fly back Wednesday evening into Chicago and the forecast is for light snow showers at night.  Can't wait for the winter fun to begin!

Man, it was a soaker yesterday. I easily received over an inch. Today should be much drier and milder with temps in the high 50s.

Weirdness this morning. It was in the upper 30's but I had a smattering of snowflakes (aggregate dendrites is what I think the term is) on the car windshield. It had cleared out, but the last passing cloud must've been a bit colder.  :)

Snowshowers in my forecast for tomorrow night, but no accumulations. Maybe a dusting. Actually, it will be lake effect. :D

Not a bad looking day today here in SEMI. Partly cloudy skies and near seasonable readings for anyone traveling here in this part of the country. :)

While there may be an end coming to the warmth that we have enjoyed for all but one of the past 15 months (only April 2016 was the only below average temperature month since last August) it should be noted that this is the longest string of above average months in Grand Rapids recorded history.  And to top it off this November will be a top 4 warmest as of today GRR mean is at 45.4° last year was the 3 warmest in GRR history and it was 45.5° today will be above average but will see tomorrow where November 2016 will end up.  Also this may be the sunniest November on record here as well so far this November there have been 8 clear days and 12 partly cloudy days. The sun has been in an out today so today may end up in the partly cloudy column.  Also of note is that with the Great Lakes as warm as they are there could be a lot of lake effect in the next several weeks so keep that in mind. The record for Grand Rapids for December is 59.2” in 2000. Some other recent December Grand Rapids totals are 54.6”in 2008 and 53.9” in 2001. On the flip side Grand Rapids only had 1.0” in 2015 and just 2.5” last year.

I was chatting with my neighbor this morning and he told me that he has been seeing squirrels all fluffy lately and that means that a harsh winter is coming. He noticed that from earlier this month. Whether is true or not, who knows. Sometimes these things sorta play out.

Those are all stout totals. Wouldn't surprise me if another one is added to that pack. Little too soon to tell yet though.

Cannot begin to tell ya how gorgeous it is outside here in SEMI. Temps soaring to 57F and climbing with mostly sunny skies and a bit of haze, if you can believe that. Feels tropical.

With November in the record books with a mean temperature of 45.4° it was the 4th warmest November at Grand Rapids. Last year Grand Rapids reading of 45.5° is in 3rd place. 2001 reading of 46.8° is In 2nd place and 1931 is if 1st place at 47.6°.  With 8 clear days and 12 partly cloudy days it also was much sunnier than average as well. As we turn to December a few items of note are 1. The winter of 1931/32 was the warmest winter in Grand Rapids history. Only 41.1” of snow was reported in GR that winter with 25.3” of that falling in a very cold March. The winter of 2001/02 while 105.2” of snow fell that winter most of that fell in the last 2 weeks in December (53.9”) and another 22.6” fell in March and to top it off 2.2” fell in April. But with the warm temperatures in January and February much of the winter had very little snow on the ground (other than the snow piles left from the December snows) and then we had last winter with very little snow in December but close to average the rest of the winter and ended up with 61.1”  now what will the winter of 2016/17 be like? While some indicators are hinting at a cold and snowy winter, the past (although small sample) may not support the cold (maybe later in the season towards March) and as for the snow? It could go either way. As always stayed tuned!

I don't mind having a mild to even a warm November, as long as D,J,F pan out cold and snowy. ;)
