VancouverIslandSouth
The Nanaimo-Parksville area got a nice dusting of "strait-effect" snow today. It was so low level that almost nothing showed up on the radar, yet many areas ended up with several inches of snow. All the while it was dry/windy a short distance north/south of the snow zone. That area has some nice geographic features that help in getting snow going into these events. As Arctic air crosses the Strait of Georgia it picks up moisture, but when it hits the island it dams up against the Vancouver Island range, winds slow and snow falls; because it's mostly immune to the outflow the snow sticks around on the trees for longer too. My brother took a picture of the start of the event: http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p286/jemeric/7197203380040816231-account_id1_zps4daxlepj.jpg Later in the day a little to the north of where that was taken it made for a great sunset scene; some of the low cloud still visible over the strait: http://webcam.beachacresresort.com/webcam/current.jpg
TT-SEA
9 out of 10 days with highs below freezing here... peak for the month has been 34. Solid snow covering the ground the entire month. 7 of the 10 days have been dry. Have not seen regular rain here since 12/27. And most of December was spent with solid snow cover. 35 inches of snow since December 4th. I knew ENSO neutral was a good thing. Certainly possible, though if the 3km NAM is right, don't read too much into the radar as there should be a lull in the next few hours for most of Portland metro, followed by heavier snow again after midnight.
