January 2017 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

It is raining really hard right now. How interesting/disappointing. I'm missing out on some really heavy snow.

Why would it go from sleet to snow to rain? Aren't the upper levels cooling down tonight?

I'm guessing some of the initial snow was associated with the immediate wet bulb with the dry layer that moved in just ahead of the first big push. Pretty complicated setup. Seems to have a convective element to it.

My preferences can beat up your preferences’ dad.

Memba' when we used to get stoked when other PNW members got snow even if it wasn't IMBY? I Memba! So Seattle members please don't play debbie downer for PDX snow, you might get the favor returned later this winter or some other time.

I'm rooting hard for puyallup!

It's becoming hard to be happy for that when PDX has beaten Seattle in terms of snow so much over the last 4-5 years.

Seems that dry slotting isn't a big issue here yet. Winds aren't super crazy, and we had some of the biggest snowflakes and heaviest snow I have seen this winter so far, aside from the snow band on Sunday morning, just a little bit ago.

Have a solid 1/4" on the ground now. That huge area of precip moving up this way should be interesting.

You'll switch back shortly, upper levels are continuing to drop. Remember you were not even supposed to be see anything until 7-9pm.

Yeah, it's pretty interesting. Very convective nature to it so far.

We had a very brief period of sleet here earlier. Definitely some interesting upper level dynamics with this one.

Oh, I'm sure it will eventually be snow here. I'm just bummed that I am missing this epic band of snow right now.

It seems I'm only a couple of miles from snow in Beaverton. Weather is crazy yo.

Gotcha. My old roommate lives off NE 74th St in Vancouver. I don't know the area at all honestly, and he asked me how much I think he'll get. No idea what to tell him lol. Best of luck down there!

Thank you. NE 74th sound like the heights area maybe? I imagine they will do well, probably even a little better than here. A conservative 2-4".

Yeah, this is going to be a very fascinating storm to watch unfold.

Some surprising juice thus far, and slight wobbles in temps and track of the low over the next 12 hours will make a big difference for many.

A forum for the end of the world.

I just switched over from rain to snow in the last couple minutes here in West Linn, I would guess you're about to change over as well.

Very east coast feel to it at the moment.

My son was desperate for a trip to Game Stop. Worked out well because it started snowing while we were in there.

I was picking up lotion for the fiancée at Walgreens on the way home from work. All the cold dry air this winter has been tough on the skin.

Did an ODOT cam tour... traffic flowing nicely it seems.   No panic in streets and people abandoning cars yet.    I expected to see people running down the freeway lanes with their hands in the air.
