March 2017 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

They probably are. I am supposed to be down by Mt. Lassen next weekend.

The cold snap falling apart in the models was actually a good thing. My fiance' said she didn't want to go if we were going to get a bunch of snow up here while we were gone (Because my brother might not be able to make it up to take care of the animals.). Now that it should just be a wet weekend, my house sitter will be able to make it up. I've never actually been to Mt. Lassen so I am looking forward to it.

That's awesome. Great area. I've been through a few times. Especially back when my brother lived in Carson City, Nevada. We camped at Lake Helen one time and walked the geothermal area at Bumpass Hell by full moon. That was pretty amazing.

What area and why? I imagine a lot of the park is inaccessible right now. The Hat Creek area might be open for hiking.

When I was leaving my house this morning heavy graupel/snow was coming down and all was white including the road. Also had some at work but it melted quickly. Not very exciting really.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

My fiance's family is from Susanville and Weed. Going down for family stuff.

Heading back from Mammoth Lakes down in the Sierra to Bend today. Driving near Susanville and through the Lassen National Forest. I'll try and make sure we take pics. It was great to see so much water all over NE CA on our way down.

Looking at the 12z GFS there sure is a lot of darn cold air just to our north for the next many days...slight tweakage will mean all the difference!!

I would feel very safe making a bet that pdx won't see any measurable snow in the next month.

Most likely. It's sort of like saying that PDX is done with 95+ degree weather for the year on September 6. Highly likely but not guaranteed.

Last June, the main trail to Bumpass Hell was still closed due to snow, so I hiked in the back way from King's Creek past Cold Boiling Lake, and had the whole place to myself. It was awesome! Sorry for the O/T post.

Nice pics. Those are both great hikes. It looks like the trees are faring better up there than down in the Sierra too.

There's a black hippopotamus in the picture!

I held off on shearing this year due to the cold. I almost sheared a few weeks ago, but decided to wait til the end of March when I get back from Oklahoma.

I wonder if Dolt got anything last night.

It was a near miss.  It snowed most of the night, but was always a degree or so too warm and didn't stick.  Probably would have ended up with 4"+ if it had been just a bit colder.  Some of the hills around Eugene got hammered.  Here on the valley floor, I got boned.  Very minor dusting on roofs, grassy areas, etc.  Bummer.

Time to start model riding for warm ridges.

I don't see any green grass for them to eat!   Won't anyone think of the sheep????

And dry or are we talking possible river flooding?

Lots of rain.   Only Friday is shown as being decent.    Probably not enough in short periods of time for flooding though.

3" on the ground. That makes 2" of new snow today since midnight. It's been consistently snowing for hours (but never heavy). KMAX still down so I don't have a very good concept of what this afternoon looks like.

Just hit the 60" mark this winter!

Pretty good agreement among the Euro ensembles that we go into a super poopy pattern later this week. It will be milder but probably gloomier than the current one. There have actually been a good deal of sunbreaks the last several days.

Most snowfall this winter since the 2007-2008 season. I'd say that's a good accomplishment.

I'm sure I'm the exception, but I just calculated that Dec/Jan/Feb here this season was only -1.9 degrees from normal. January was the only cold month as I explained before on this forum, and February was a bit warmer than average. Overall not a "very cold" winter, but January was pretty cold.
