Salem will end up with around a -0.5 departure. It will be around -1 up here. Still about a degree cooler than last December, which was actually above average for SLE.

Two Decembers in a row with a huge N to S gradient.  NW OR is due for a good one.

December 2013 and 16 were probably more anomalously cold down here, so

it evens out in time.

The gradient is more Seattle north. Olympia will end up barely below average too.

The EPS is quite a bit more aggressive with the retrogression on this run.  Anomalous troughing is pulled back to the NW Pacific late in the run.

Interesting temp spread in Dec 2016. NW OR colder than western WA, then an N/S gradient south of 44°N. Sunriver was -7 that month, Klamath was -1.5.

Very true.  The difference in anomaly between SEA and OLM is pretty unusual.  A lot of this stuff has run out of gas around Tacoma.  I have been just on the good sign of the line a decent amount of the time.  I'm thinking the next round of winter may be more region wide.

In 2016-17 the bigger difference was in January BTW.

It’s still our coldest December down here since 2017.

Oddly 2017 was very cold in the Willamette Valley. I don’t remember much about that month because it didn’t even snow up here and we missed out on the Christmas event, but it was the 13th coldest December at EUG, and I believe top 20 for SLE.

Yes indeed.  The EPO drops to about -1 at the end on the EPS.  Pacific shutdown is underway at that point.  Good change from the 0z run.

Naaahhh... the south wind is pretty nice.  It has melted all of our snow and the ground is soft again.   Might be able to do some yard work now if we get a few dry days.   We always do some clean up and spring prep in January unless there is snow on the ground.

We pulled off the coldest Jan 1st to 17th on record. Beating out months like 1950, 1949 and 1979. Hillsboro with a longer POR beat out years like 1930 and 1937 in addition to 1950, 1949 and 1979 as well for that time period.

That winter was decent. The end of February and then the big snow event we had at the end of March made the winter though. The nice thing about this location is March and even April can make up for our annual January dud.

That is flat out astonishing.  Those are some bad azz months there.  It was cold here in that period, but not on the level of the other years you listed.  It was cold enough that a good sized lake near here froze over from shore to shore in fact.

Yeah it was a wonderful stretch. We had snow cover for the majority of that stretch as well with 14" of snow. Thankfully the Puget Sound got snow in February and December 2017 though

The multi station feature is also really cool. It can map snowfall totals from COOP sites, COCORAHS and a bunch of other sites all in one place. Like this for Feb 2019

Currently 46F and sunny with a few scattered clouds to the north. I might make my son stop watching tv to go out for a few minutes.

I saw on the WW CA blog that SF has had their second wettest day on record. Not sure if it is their second most of any date or just for the 31st. I'm super curious to see how my parents did though they were gone yesterday so not sure how accurate read they will have.

I don't mind a quiet weekend here. We might go to the WSU Cougars hoops game tomorrow against U$C and pretend we are @TT-SEA's son. They have a promo where anyone can sit courtside in the student section for cheap since WSU is on break for another week. Weather looks good on the Palouse tomorrow.

Edit: It is actually 2nd all time of any date for SF since the Gold Rush. If they can squeeze about .40 between now and midnight they could break their all time record set 11/05/94. I like following the weather even if it's not PNW.
