Here's the thing about winter climo here. Our terrain is really good at blocking cold air from Canada, but also, thanks to those same mountains, we tend to keep cold air around in shallow pockets for quite a long time. Obviously, keeping a -PNA block with low heights centered overhead is the best way to maintain cold. But, on the westside at least, our biggest battle by far is getting the cold air to show up in the first place. After that, whether we warm up or not is more or less up to exactly how Pacific storm systems re-enter the area. So, my point being, any one initial intrusion of arctic air can evolve into a situation as cold and snowy as any other pattern delivering said air, regardless of the exact 500mb pattern. We can be briefly clipped by a potent TPV lobe, then break down the ridge and welcome in our normal westerlies, and, assuming surface pressure gradients remain offshore, we can still come away with multiple subfreezing highs and feet of snow.

Low clouds tried to move in from west in last hour but now watching those low clouds move back westward revealing Mt Si again.
