My wife finds that on the days she works from home she gets way more done than at her physical workplace since co workers are quite often interrupting her about work stuff or workplace drama, or just about the Kraken.

My husband works in a building with fewer interruptions since they moved about 3/4 of the people downtown.  
He’s rarely interrupted now and gets tons done.  
The City’s really worried he’ll retire the end of ‘24.  ( So am I.  I’m used to having a quiet day! )

Musk has a point. I experienced a lot of at home workers during Covid. They tended to socialize with me too much. Many were younger workers. So, I see his point, though harshly stated.

Was in Chicago recently, wonderful city if you stay in the right areas. I usually go to DC 1-2 times a year, absolutely love it. Cities like PDX and SEA are the real hellholes.

Seattle has an abominable addiction crisis. I admit it. I had convinced myself it was fine, but after visiting NYC and seeing how a real city properly operates, it was quite jarring. If there are any bad neighborhoods there like I've been told, I didn't go through any. And I went all over the city, at various points during the day.

Seattle isn't a shithole though. Its climate, transit system, and parks department are among the best in the country. If you know which wily individuals are best left ignored, Seattle is an easy city to navigate, and full of dreamy views. Truthfully, I enjoy living here.

In my experience working from home is a mixed back. I worked from home for about a year at the beginning of the pandemic. At first I hated it, then I got acclimated, and now I am back to hating it again. At a personal level, having a one year old child makes working from home extremely challenging. Also connecting with people 1:1 is a big part of what I do, I am much more comfortable doing that in person. 

Also, the productivity of most people who work from home is just non-existent. To me the work from home craze has revealed some real inefficiencies in our economic system. 

On the other hand, the decline in need for office space could be a good thing, if we can repurpose those office buildings for affordable housing. 

As for people interrupting at work about work stuff, or work drama, or the Kraken... I would argue engaging with co-workers within reason, is an importance piece of forming a cohesive team.

The thing people who just watch Fox News don't understand is that doing something like going to Chicago to visit is not a dangerous activity. As I have said before I feel much safer in downtown Chicago than Portland. Yes, Chicago has insane amounts of crime and murder, but it happens in neighborhoods no tourist would ever go. So for the average random person, its not an unsafe city.

I didn't feel unsafe in Portland when I was there last month.

Yes, there was more graffiti and visible homelessness than I remembered in the pre-COVID days. Yes, that's a problem (particularly the increase in homelessness).

But it was far from an urban wasteland where those who visit put their lives at extreme risk.

(Interestingly, a similar narrative exists in some of the Canadian media about Vancouver.)

In 2019 PDX had 26 murders. They had around 100 last year and at a similar pace this year. For whatever reason the city became significantly more violent after May 2020. That is a fact, not political commentary. That being said roaming around the city, especially during daylight hours is not a dangerous activity, most (Though not all.) of these murders are not random. But it is not as safe as it once was, when less than 5 years ago it had one of the lowest violent crime rates of any major city in America. The increase in violence has also disproportionately impacted people lower on the economic ladder and people of color. During the pandemic a Black male in Portland had a greater chance of being murdered than dying of COVID, and about 50% of murder victims in Portland are Black, even though they make up only 6% of the total population of the city. Of people under 20 murdered in Portland last year, all but one was Black.
