April 2024 Weather in the PNW

Good news is burning is allowed today. When I burn the wet straw from the dog kennels I will make sure the wind is blowing towards @MossMan's house!

Pre-frontal sunny days are classic conditions for contrails.  It's science not conspiracy.

Not sure but I can tell you I was quite worried about WW3 earlier but now I feel like calmly and meekly paying my taxes.

Cottonwoods starting to take on the glossy green summer look here now.   A couple weeks out from puffball mania.

Buddy and I went on a walk to enjoy the catastrophe today. Saw some cumulus shrouding Mt. Rainier, lots of high clouds, sunny, mild weather.

Him and I are both science nerds so we got to talking about adiabatic cooling and how it works... Neither of us really knew the exact answer, and none of the information we read online felt comprehensive or satisfying. After some shared thought my buddy tossed me a theory that I think makes the most sense. As he guessed, as a parcel rises, and the volume of that parcel increases, the fastest moving ("hottest") molecules in that parcel travel outwards towards the edge first, since they are faster. Those "hot" molecules, being the first of the parcel to make direct contact with the environent surrounding it, transfer their heat out via conduction. It's essentially a molecule sorting process, where the hottest molecules are most likely to conduct their thermal energy to the surroundings, since they are faster than the rest of the molecules, and fill in the expanding parcel first. As you can imagine, transferring heat out of the parcel via the warmest particales preferentially will cool off the parcel, and at a fixed, predictable rate, too.

Any seasoned mets want to pitch in? Are we onto something or shooting blanks? Don't know where else to ask. Maybe Reid Wolcott knows.

To simplify it greatly, the “cooling” occurs because the average kinetic energy of molecules decreases as the parcel expands and does work on its surroundings.

It boils down to the 1st law of thermodynamics, where ΔU = Q - W (change in internal energy of the system equals the heat added to the system minus the work done by the system). Because this is an adiabatic process, Q (heat exchanged) will always = 0. So therefore ΔU = -W.

So the more work the parcel does on its surroundings, the more the internal kinetic energy will decrease.

Of course the atmosphere is not an ideal gas, so the equation is a bit more complicated as the translational, vibrational, and rotational molecular degrees of freedom all have to be accounted for, and the atmosphere consists of monoatomic, diatomic, triatomic, tetraatomic, and pentaatomic molecules.

Long story short, the moist and dry adiabatic lapse rates differ due to the absorption/release of latent heat during the phase changes of H2O. DALR is simply G/Cp (~ 9.8K/km) while the MALR is state dependent because you have to factor in latent heat of vaporization, mixing ratio of moist air r/t dry air, the specific gas constants for moist and dry air, absolute temperature (in K) and the specific heat of dry air at constant pressure.

85 is too cold.  105 is better.  125 is ideal.

Looks like a mid summer day at T-Mobile for the Mariners game.  Better than the roof closed cold misery that will be tomorrow's game.

That’s how it always is around here too. I’ve learned to add at least 3-5 degrees to every forecast high lately. Especially at the major record keeping stations. A day like yesterday where we actually underachieved most guidance is really rare and notable these days.

Another gorgeous weekend day! Got another landscape freshening phase done, now it’s BBQ time.
Oh and a Bobcat paid a visit as well. Waltzed right by the kitchen window so I grabbed my phone as it was rounding the garage and to the side of the house. By the time I got around to that side it had just jumped over my gate.

No it was smaller than a Puma so definitely Bobcat. I had a great visual when it was by the kitchen window, of course it was the one time my phone wasn’t attached to me!
