The key details are that there is a long term background state which should promote ridging into AK and to the north as well as a persist polar vortex of some amplitude near Hudson Bay. The MJO forcing will temporary mask this over the next few weeks but as it comes back around to phases 7-1 we should see the +TNH/-EPO/+PNA pattern return. The upper polar vortex, which is very strong, may merge with the lower vortex more effectively as we get later into winter. This will be helped by the persistent trough increasing the snow cover in Canada the next little while. Some other relevant maps: I think the vortex may end up further west into January which should mean some snow chances at times in addition to the cooler weather. So my takeaway is to be patient, winter will return.
