January 2017 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

I actually enjoy rain to snow events a lot more in some ways. Fun and rewarding to track and better than having to track fizzled rounds of virga. We haven't had a setup like this in awhile.

True, but few things are as frustrating as finally getting cold enough for snow and then having no juice left. These things are infuriating when they don't work out.

Blazing sunshine here and the air has really dried out... nothing is melting at all.     Absolutely gorgeous day.

No snow on the trees in your yard...highly disappointing.

Maybe a little more wind and a little less cold. I bet they don't drop below the mid 20's if the wind is blowing. Probably 26 or so tonight. Another lame Fraser river push.

Looks like Lynden, Blaine, Ferndale, and even Bellingham are all below freezing...not bad!

No... but everything is frozen up! Snow should be gone when we get back from our trip. ECMWF show lots of rain early next week. Should make through the first 15 days of January with solid snow cover. That will make almost 6 weeks with snow on the ground here.

Raining pretty hard here now. 39F. Long way down.

Troutdale started out right away with a rain/snow mix.

Yikes...that is not good. Hopefully you can wet your bulb or something.

The HRRR continues to show a perfect set-up in the Portland area overnight... and its encouraging to see so much cold air pouring into WA already.

This is going to be fun to watch.

North wind down the valley to EUG now, would like to see the temp at The dalles drop a bit 31 there right now. Looks good at least for PDX right now though, precip is a bit anemic right now so we ll see if we can fix that.

If you don't start cutting those trees down, they will be blocking your view in 5 years.

I know!   We have been talking about that for the last couple years... deciding whether to thin them out or top them.   I think topping them looks ugly.

I am in the process of cutting a bunch of reprod to improve the view, it is liberating.

Trees grow like weeds here... I feel no anguish in cutting some down for more sunlight and to open up the view again.
