January Weather In the PNW

This whole winter thus far should be.

February isn't looking all that great (as if it was) I bet we get no more lowland snow this year and if we do it'll be in mid/late March

F**** this climate

Wow. This winter turned **** into a five letter word.

I think 2000/01 was/is a much better “large scale” pattern analog than 2005/06. The latter didn’t have nearly as much mid-latitude Arctic air (around the world, really) as this winter has had (so far, at least).

Pretty major Arctic blast in eastern Europe in January 2006. Some all-time record lows in places like Ukraine.

Its pretty uncanny how good of an analog both 2001 and 2006 ended up being. Right down to 1" snow events in Portland in mid-December preceding January lameness under -ENSO.

We can only hope the path we follow forward is closer to 2006.

Not to my knowledge, at least nothing that stuck.  I don't remember anything all that cold.  Onshore cold maybe but not really anything very significant enough to remember.

Edit: looking at the Wunderground archives, it seems March 21 was a borderline event that had non-sticking snow in some parts of the valley, so I guess that counts for some folks?

You are just trolling now. Salem had 4" of snow with the March 22nd event, and Silverton/Mt. Angel had 1-2" wet snow accumulations on the 13th and the 1st of March, as well as an inch in January 2012, I know much of the Salem area did two at least with the March events.

Pretty major Arctic blast in eastern Europe in January 2006. Some all-time record lows in places like Ukraine.

That’s the opposite of this year, right? Eastern Europe and western Russia have been pretty warm this winter, while central/eastern Siberia is in the freezer now.

Overall, though, it looks like the NH middle latitudes are running much colder in January 2018, compared to January 2006.

Both the 21 and 22 had highs of 36 and 46 respectively. Seems like it was not cold enough to stick around other than for a sloppy little bit. Again, if people want to count sloppy March snow then fine. I'm speaking more to late Nov-late Feb events where the snow can actually stay on the ground for more than 6 hours.

Someone's feeling left out. Give him some love, guys!

Its a pretty significant storm... and its all I am hearing about of course from friends and family.   They have been snow-starved this winter too.

The next 7-8 days look crazy active.

That should solidify the base at Snoqualmie Summit to ensure a run well into April regardless of what happens.

It will be nice to get another taste of spring in a couple weeks if it holds up.

I am guessing nothing at my house... the only time its cold enough for sticking snow here is on Thursday morning at a time when there is no precipitation.

Looks much better for you.

We had 1.5" on the ground at 18th and Hilyard. I remember it well because it seemed like I had to brush off a bunch of snow from the satellite dish but it wasn't accumulating on the ground as much as it felt like it should have been. I think the ground temps were pretty warm. Then it melted overnight. I guess it was a major event up on the buttes and areas above 500' but I am speaking to areas below 500' on the valley floor.
