January Weather In the PNW

He is obviously trolling. First he claims a major Eugene snow event from January 2008 had 1-2" of "wet slop," now he is saying the valley did not get anything in March 2012. lol

I can’t quite wrap my head around WoodsLibido. I think he seems like a cool guy with a legitimately bad memory.

88 is considered to be "cold" for many on the east coast. It wasn't bad until a part of August anyways.

Moderators should try to refrain from taking sides in these opinion wars. Many in the PNW do not like hot summers, and after five consecutive scorchers we have every right to hope for something different.

I live in the PNW, so I don't have to refrain from taking a side in an opinion war. Besides, from a comfort standpoint I agree with temps from 75-80 being more desirable, I'm just saying 88 isn't hot to many on the east coast.

It depends. If it’s 88*F with a 60*F dewpoint, it would be a “cool” day by our standards, but 88*F with a 75*F dewpoint is pretty typical/gross.

Epilepsy will do that to you. And I know a thing or two about a pretty cool member too.

It still seems like the 10s have not been as good as the 90s and 00s (I didn't move here until 1989) but that's probly some sort of confirmation bias too.

This is payback for what was a pretty solid winter last year it seems.

Yes... summers on the west side of the Cascades in the PNW are known to be ridiculously hot and sweaty. Often confused with Texas and Florida and Washington DC.

Always a death ridge... always 100+ heat. It never ends. April to October. That is why many people here escape to somewhere else in the summer. Nobody wants to be around here. Its literally hell on Earth.

This isn’t a troll post, Jesse. I just think this is some crazy clown range weather porn.

Yeah..-46C 850mb temperatures in SE Canada. I’m not sure that has ever happened in the modern era.

It's over for us here in the PNW until next winter but I can appreciate that extremely frigid air that's being depicted. It sure would be something if that materializes.

Pretty boring. Some cold and warm members but the mean puts us right at normal or slightly above. Nothing close to Arctic as it indeed looks like it will slide east...again.

I was born in Baltimore and have been there several times to visit family. Pure misery as far as weather. To hot. To much humidity.

Thank you, finally someone who gets it. There’s a reason I rant and complain 5+ months every year.

It sure felt like these past 4 summers were way hotter than normal. Wildfires seemed a bit more rampant at times, this past summer being really bad for them.

We are due for a cooler and wetter than normal summer, but then again we are also due for a historic Arctic airmass like 1990 as well.

I'm on the east coast right now, NYC for work. It's humid AND snowless, pretty awful.

Even in the dead of winter, we can’t escape the #swamp.

I can’t remember the last time we avoided upper 60s dewpoints during DJF. Even our coldest winters have those nasty stretches.

Not to my knowledge, at least nothing that stuck.  I don't remember anything all that cold.  Onshore cold maybe but not really anything very significant enough to remember.

Edit: looking at the Wunderground archives, it seems March 21 was a borderline event that had non-sticking snow in some parts of the valley, so I guess that counts for some folks?

Way to sh*t all over one of the most significant late season snowstorms in history along the I-5 corridor. The Eugene area had something like 5" to 7".

42 in NYC right now... 47 at SEA.

We are more awful!   And its probably much greener here.   ;)

And I clarified in a later post that I had forgotten the event due to a death in the family and I was in Lincoln City during the snowstorm. Some parts of the coast had some snow mixing in but not much. The valley, esp the south valley had a nice event. Wish I could have been there for it. I was here for last year though so that will have to hold me over for now.

That’s the opposite of this year, right? Eastern Europe and western Russia have been pretty warm this winter, while central/eastern Siberia is in the freezer now.

Overall, though, it looks like the NH middle latitudes are running much colder in January 2018, compared to January 2006.

That doesn't surprise me. I'm just pointing out that there was some serious cold air in play in the mid-latitudes in 2006 as well. That cold wave in late January actually spread across Europe. Lisbon saw their first snowfall since the 1950's. Some really impressive readings too, like the -31c in Moscow and -26c in Warsaw.

Just posting this for information's sake.

BTW, here's a snapshot of one of the stations that actually set an all-time record low in this cold wave. This data is for Kherson, just inland from the Black Sea coast in southern Ukraine.

But in case you don't remember please read this article...That was the single greatest March snow event on record at EUG...This article was written in the morning...Most of the snow in the Central valley fell that afternoon and evening...

Wow, even more snow fell in the Eugene area than I remember.

This might interest anyone here trying to (roughly) guage where the planetary heat budget is going.

Climo:

Red = Oceanic heat uptake from atmosphere.

Blue = Oceanic heat loss to atmosphere.

And a week earlier the coast from about Florence to Tillamook at least, had a major snow event.

March 12-13, 2012 was truly historic along the coast for the time of year. Easily forgotten event since it barely affected the Portland area (although we did see some light snow here in town).

5.0" in Gardiner

4.7" in Florence

4.5" in Newport

3.5" in Bandon

Ok, that's all fair. But you were making statements as if they were facts. If you don't know something, that's all right. You can always double check yourself before making a post. All this data is publicly available.

Weird. my memory must be totally shot. I don't remember Pacific City having anything. Was it primarily a Central and South coast event?
