Snow overnight on Wednesday... marginal temps of course.    Between 34-36 in Seattle all night.   Maybe some ice in Portland?  

 

 

 

And then some cold rain on Thursday with highs around 40... with a roaring SW wind in the Seattle area in the afternoon just to add to the nastiness.

The Euro still likes the idea of some snow at the middle of next week.  The low tracks very favorably for some and the time of day is perfect for the Seattle area.

Amazing how just leftover cold air is spitting out numbers like this.  We are probably looking at an amazing week coming up for low temps.  The Euro shows it still dropping to freezing every night late next week.

I posted pics of the scene here today.   Basically the same one that I often post of Mt Si and the front yard from the window.    

 

What do you want to see?   I will take one of the backyard tomorrow if you want.   Its white.   I have posted at least 50 pics since the snow started on February 3rd.   Only Randy has posted more.

Unfortunately my shop has sustained major damage from the snow. A part of the roof has sagged and the beams in that area have cracked/broken and will need to be replaced. My in-laws were going to help me fix it up this summer, but hoping there is not a collapse of that section because it is where I store my wood. I put some extra supports in today and removed quite a bit of snow from the roof. If I end up having to re-do the roof I may do it at a steeper angle so the snow slides off like it does on the other section of the shop. The snow on the part that is damaged was 2-3' deep, with about a 4" layer of ice at the bottom. The whole column of snow was frozen into several layers that I had to break through when shoveling it off. I'm guessing the snow is deeper up there than on the ground because the cold metal of the roof prevented as much melting as the warm ground at the beginning of the month long snow event.

There is some brutally cold air in play in Alberta and Eastern BC right now.  These numbers look even more impressive than they were before the freezing wind we had earlier this week.  A lot of readings up there already into the -20s and -30 tonight.  Yikes!

As cool as snowy and cold weather are it does create problems.  I had to buy a battery this week for one of our cars.  It's still totally worth it though.

Yeah....this is a really severe situation setting up.  This is definitely old school stuff.

 

Just noticed that maps shows highs in the 18 to 22 range for most of Eastern WA.  That would be pretty d**n epic for them.  Anywhere exposed to outflow winds on our side that day could see highs fail to reach 40.

It is amazing how far south brutally cold weather can penetrate in early March. My old town of Bartlesville, OK is forecast to have a 22/5 day on Monday. Neither the high or low would be records. Then by about the 20th their record min maxes are in the 40s.

I would be surprised if Redmond, OR does not set a monthly record low. From what I can tell it currently sits at -1. With all that snow cover and the incoming airmass it seems like they have a great shot.

Sorry to hear that. Kind of puts a human perspective on weather like this. I imagine there was a lot of hardship in those 19th century winters we drool about.

The crazy thing is, the northern Plains saw an all-time March cold wave just a few years ago in 2014. Now happening again.

There is something really special going on this year.  I've never witnessed this kind of sustained cold this late and only rarely during any part of any winter.  It will be interesting to see how many freezing low temps we'll be able to string.

Thank you. It is a bit frustrating, when you have a small acreage, especially in a climate where everything grows and rots so fast it seems like the maintenance and upkeep is never ending. I think about how people handled some of those 19th Century events up here. Silverton was incorporated as a town in 1853 and there was a small logging town of a couple hundred at Silver Falls (Silver Falls City) in the 1880s. I cannot imagine living up here in the 1800s when some of those events rolled through. 

 

One thing this winter has show me, is I need to take some more pro-active steps moving forward to be ready for winter weather like this. March 2012 and Dec/Jan 16-17 were really nothing compared to this month for sustained snow cover with no real warm ups. And this month really was nothing compared to some of the historical beasts up here like January 1950, 1969, or even late January 2008. The park recorded 40"+ depths in all those winters, which is a little frightening as I tend to get more snow than that area of the park due to elevation.

I am interested to see how low temps get up here early next week. I am pretty wind sheltered and have about 18" of snow on the ground. Dewpoints are still pretty high tonight, and even though skies are clear I am just sitting right around freezing, but I would imagine tomorrow night and definitely Sunday night the temps will take a major nosedive.

People must have had a different perspective back then. What is normal, what is doable, how much suffering is acceptable. Hard to imagine today especially for city people like me. BTW, December 1884 had to be absolutely brutal up there. There was a signal service station at Eola at the time which recorded about 60" that month near the valley floor, with 50"+ coming in the span of one week.

My friend who lives a few miles away said his average was 11.5 degrees! Epic cold over there.
