December 2015 in the Pacific Northwest

Just got home in Bonney Lake. Have maybe a half inch of melting snow. It is raining fairly steadily now and 34 degrees... Roads totally clear. I love fake snow!... :P I wonder if this will be the best we can do this winter? We shall see. Long range on the 18z today was a major dog pile.    ;)

Looks like several more lowland snow chances over the next 4-5 days. Models have definitely trended back colder in the near term.

??   Maybe the end of week for the puget sound? Dec 28th looks to be best now but super short lived. Just not seeing it in the current models. NOT to say it will not happen.

This is snowfall up until the 27th. Puget sound (lowlands) nada to less than an inch.

Went out to test the roads... its mess.   Cars in the ditch all over.   Got almost home and found my neighbor in the ditch... got my boys and we pushed him out.

It will be epically bad if we get a region wide snowstorm storm. People are having a very difficult time just in the rain.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Different snow models show varying snow amounts for the lowlands (which are more extensive than just right by the Sound), but I'm going mainly off the pattern, temps, and precip possibilities.

The ultra-conservative Seattle NWS has even put in the possibilities of snow showers on Christmas Day, 4 days out.

Wow, that's nuts. How much snow would you say there is.. .looks like about 4" or so already.

My son just measured 5 inches in the yard.

Back edge of the precip is not moving and its still snowing hard.

Flow behind low is perfect for damming the cold air against the Cascades and keeping the snow going here for at least a little longer.

The low is 300 miles away now and its still working its magic here.

Have not had a hint of a breeze here the entire day.   And its still dead calm with the snow caked on even the deciduous trees.

This system on Wednesday afternoon has to be all rain... even up here.   With that much onshore flow and 850mb temp around -3C?

I never pay attention to 850s. Sub 528 thickness is what I look for. Idk that I have ever had rain with it.

I wonder how this is going to play out for my neck of the woods. Its going to be colder then s*** here for the next several days. Apparently, according to WU and NWS, its supposed to get down into the single digits X-mas night.....

It had really let up here... and the radar made it look like it was winding down.   But now a solid c-zone has formed all the way back to Seattle and the snow has really picked up here.

Yet the NAM also shows sub 522 thickness well into Oregon at hour 84 lol

Today started with light snow in the morning then a burst of heavy snow for 3 hours or so this afternoon.  Flakes were huge!  Stayed on the cold side of the low so temperatures hovered at 31F with NE winds blowing out from the Idaho Purcell Trench (Sandpoint to Coeur d'Alene).  Trees look epic beautiful.  Got about 5" so far.  Snow is still falling albeit lighter at this time.  Will be interesting to see how much wrap around precip persists thru the night.

For all the monsters that have been cheering the heavy mountain snows:

Tragic. You don't hear about this kind of thing happening right in the ski resort very often.

One of my friends is driving from Bellingham to Spokane today, normally a 5 hour drive.

He left at 9 AM and is still stuck in traffic just east of Ellensburg. He said he's seen dozens of cars off the road and several semis in the ditch.

Happened on winter break in college to a guy who lived in my quad.

You can't be serious... Lowland snowstorms cause far more fatalities, and people choose to go to the mountains to play and are generally more aware of the risks they are taking.

Dries out rapidly after that, though. Trough just doesn't carve out at all like some runs earlier today showed.

As long as we get something up here. A lot of times moisture tends to over perform up here. November 2014 was a prime example, models looked quite dry but I still ended up with nearly 2".
