Snow accumulations have been upped from 6-12inches to 8-13" for storm totals. Couple more hours of snow here and it will finally come to an end. They are saying by 3am it should taper off.

Congrats guys.

Jealous though.

Thanks man, and understood.

Not sure, don't keep track of time.

BTW: how much snow you have so far?

Must have gotten in a weak zone of returns customer it's pixie dust and I think only around 8" has fallen. Earlier it looked like 10-12 was a lock.

Now that the first big snow event of the winter of 2016/17 has come to an end it is now time to see how this event has compared to past December 11th events. In Grand Rapids the official snow fall amount came in at 8.9” The will put this event in 3rd place with 14.5” in 2000 in 1st place and 10.3” in 2nd place is the 10.3” that fell in 1970. So far this month GR has now received 23.6” of snow. This event is also in 3rd place over in Lansing where yesterday they recoded 7.4” with 14.5” in 2000 in first place and 8.9” in also in 1970. At Lansing, the total this month is now at 12.8”   At Muskegon the yesterday official snow fall came at 7.6” this is also in 3 place for the date with 10.8” in 2000 in 1st place and 9” in 1962 in 2nd place. For the month, Muskegon is now at 12.8”.

Over on the east side of the state Detroit set a new record for the date with 10.6” of snow their old record was only 5.5” in 2000.  The monthly total at Detroit is now at 11.6” At Flint they officially reported 10.0” and that fell just short of their record of 10.8” in 2000. And for the month they are now at 13.0” At Saginaw they report there was 7.8” I have no record for the date there. For the month, Saginaw is now at 10.4”

I know our peeps out in the plains don't want to hear this, but we're suddenly killing it here in SMI. Though I fell short of dbl digits from the system (9.1" was my total), the 16.6" in mby since Thursday afternoon is pretty wild stuff by Marshall standards for Jan or Feb, let alone first part of Dec.  :D  With 21.3" on the young season, if I don't get another flake the rest of the month I've already beaten 2013 by almost 3" thru the 31st. It did pop up to 34º over night, so it's compaction city with the warm ground. Really need that PV chill to lock up the mushiness and take some of this latent heat out of the ground, especially in town.

Gonna be tough to get the heat of of the ground with the insulation on top.  I think it was 2013 here that even though it was so cold we barely had frost in the ground

ORD officially recorded 7.8" with a seasonal snowfall total of 14.2" (running about a Foot above normal)...the northern burbs cashed in with 7-11" north of I-88 where the secondary band filled in the quickest and snowed persistently on Sunday.

Nice.  Looks like totals around there were very similar to around here.  The highest official reporting station I saw around here was winona(about 20 miles east of my house).  They had 9.3

Sharp cut-off south of I-80 which was expected...some spots only managed to get around 3-5"...very nice system and got to experience the fluffy snow along with the wetter snow.  Now everything is frozen solid so let the glacier build!

6.6" reported at the nearest reporting location in Plover, Wi. The kids beat me outside so I couldn't find and undisturbed location to measure.  :P

The snow was light and fluffy but still very packable. One more snowfall and the trails should be good to go!!!

Not sure about Marshall but here closer to the lake it is not unusual for there not to be much frost in the ground if we get an early snow fall. But as you said the ground is still very warm and soft and as long as we have this much snow on the ground it will be hard to get a real deep frost in the ground.

Shallow ground frost is very common in this area if we get a lot of early season lake effect. I used to live on the east side of Michigan and that is not the case over there most years.

That's just what we use to pack in a solid base. Once the trail is established we use the drag below. It has angled blades to take the tops of off moguls. As the snow rolls in the drag it warms a little bit and then the rollers and pan flatten the snow as it leaves the drag. These below zero nights coming up will set the trail up like pavement. Fast and smooth!!!

Do you work for the city or state and maintain the trails during the cold season?

There's about 600 clubs maintaining 25,000 miles across Wisconsin. Nearly all of it is done by volunteers. Check awsc.org

Sorry to hijack the thread.

Yeah, go back to your grooming! Leave us to our maps.

j/k

There was nothing cooler to a winter geek than meeting the groomer in the middle of nowhere at night in heavy snow! Of course, he can't back up so you got to blaze a trail around somehow through the trees and 3 foot of powder. Loved that!

North side winner (like Cubs!). I noticed you don't have any seasonal or yearly totals in your sig. Is that not your thing? We all have our "things" that we prefer on the wx hobby, eh? I know mine's not chasing every model run update - LOL

k, so I'm finally finding a storm summary map at GRR's site and as you can see, it confirms what I noticed on radar. There was a lull in the action right up the middle of the mitt, with the loss of at least an inch vs east or west of my place. Nice to have one's measuring confirmed, though others beat you. lol
