Quite the day/night here in Central Iowa. I believe DSM set a record high of 69.  My house...about 10 mins SW of airport now at 36, winds sustained at 41 gusting to 54mph and we now have -SN.  FLurries really.  But still...a record high and snow in same day.  Reminds me of the tornado and snow a few years ago in a span of 6 hours!

Even N.MN got the shaft on this one.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Duluth MN
1131 PM CST Mon Dec 4 2017

.SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Tuesday night)
Issued at 1123 PM CST Mon Dec 4 2017

Removed the winter storm warnings due to lack of snowfall.

Then they got put back in a WWA this AM. But overall a bust.  Hopefully not a sign for the rest of us this winter.

Woah nellie! Snow and gusts up to 40mph. Visibility appears to be down to around 100-200 ft looking out the window. I’ll be stepping outside in a minute to experience this.

Down to 27F and still falling.

What did you end up with?  I bet that was a fun experience and hope you scored at least a couple inches.

Very difficult to tell how much we got due to the blowing and drifting. Looks like 2-3” at least. Drifts are a few inches higher than that. Great little event that overachieved a bit here. Looks like it was a bust in areas north of here as Griz mentioned.

Hey man, you scored at least 2" from what was a nail biter from the get-go.  The Euro was back and forth with the placement of the defo band but in the end, the powerful storm did produce enough to snow and I'm sure you gladly would take the snow you got and run with it.

Man it is NASTY out there. Winds still howling, temp of 13 with a WC of -1. The snow was quite wet, and it all flash froze overnight. The roads and the parking lots are a skating rink. Here are a few pics.

Jealous!  Ol' Man Winter threw you a bone bud and it sure looks like a pretty scene.  Sometimes those wetter snows are better to build the foundation of a glacier as it won't settle as much.  Congrats again!

Thanks Tom. It’s nice to actually score a win for once. They seem to be few and far between the last few years (according to MN standards). Ol’ Man Winter definitely threw us a bone. The best part is that the snow should stick around for quite a while with only one day forecasted to hit 32 in the next 7-10 days.

One more pic. The sun has come out. Nothing better than a sunny day after a fresh snowfall. The winds last night broke up the ice on the lake. Now I hope and pray the wind dies down ASAP otherwise the water is going to refreeze with huge ripples in it. Would be impossible to skate on all winter.

Dang, you should frame this one. Postcard pic for sure! Are you a photographer by any chance?! ;) :D

Thanks! I’ve taken a few photography classes, but I’m no photographer by any means. I’m fortunate enough to be surrounded by beautiful scenery. That makes up for a lack of skill!

Awesome! :D

I asked for a simple camera for Christmas so I could take some wx shots. Don't want to use my wife's and have something go wrong in the field as they say. I'd be in big trouble

From a Keewenaw resident:

"There is a lot of snow out there. I'm not sure how much at all. Probably around a foot...maybe more, maybe less. There are waist deep drifts on me all over the place and I'm 6'1"

Pic to go with...looks nasty!

Per MQT

"Overview

After a stretch of relatively dry and mild conditions, a strong low pressure system impacted the Great Lakes bringing the return of winter conditions. Near-record high temperatures were met with rare December thunderstorms as the low pressure system rapidly strengthened as it approached the area. As the storm passed by, high winds with gusts over 60 MPH, lead to sporadic power outages and heavy lake effect snow across the west and northwestern snow belts. A hurricane-force wind gust of 75 MPH was also measured at the Stannard Rock Lighthouse on Lake Superior."

That’s just beautiful! I’ve always wanted to go back up into that part of the U.P. during the LES season. Depending on how things go, I want to go up there this season sometime.
