March 2019 Weather Discussion in the PNW

BLI snowman

Recommended Posts

Wide range of temps this morning as warm air filters down in offshore flow in places but not others.

Its already 60 degrees in Enuwclaw at dawn.    Also see 57 in Maple Valley.   But just 37 down the road in Auburn.

Its 30 in Olympia and 60 in Enuwclaw at the same time.   :o

And 55 degrees in Portland already.

I had frost on my car in Bonney lake. Amazing the temp difference is just 7 miles.

It was 43 here earlier but the wind picked up a little and now it 54.    The wind is warm out there.

All the parts you'd never stray from. Ie the beach side resorts.

We strayed away to Waimea Canyon and it was 52 and drizzling up there.    We did not pay money to have our normal weather at home... it was nice to see but also nice to go back down into the 80-degree sunshine.   ;)

Could conceivably never rain again. Score.

Hyperbole!

A couple weeks ago... I was thinking it would never be warm again.   But here we are.

Lots of rain ahead.

Could be true for any of us lucky enough to die before having to endure the end of this dry period.

Sensor at PDX went out this morning and had to be replaced...Apparently the 70 degree reading at 915a was not accurate.

Looks like that sensor finally jumped the shark. We all knew it was coming someday. Maybe the new one won’t constantly run a few degrees warmer than the rest of the area this spring and summer.

PDX hit 70 at 9:15 AM.

Total insanity for mid-March.

EDIT: I see now it is a sensor error. It dropped back down to 55 and then rose again to 73.

I think Andrew is overseeing the sensor replacement effort. Curious how that’s going.

Salem up to an incredible 68 already. Mid to high 70s look likely there. Salem is probably another sensor that needs to be checked while we are on the topic. They've run warm for 5-6 years it seems...

Looks like an inversion has developed over Central Oregon with temps there only in the mid-30s. Still some very impressive lows east side this morning.

Going really well. Only negative departures from now on!

Kind of grappling with some heavy topics today. Does the record heat today and tomorrow tarnish the stretch we just went through or make it that much more special?

And in some ways was this complete flip inevitable, just as March 1960 and 1951 saw quite a bit of warm weather later on in the month.
