MossMan
As many on here know I love watching past video footage (news coverage) of past winter storms around the Puget Sound area. I have VHS tapes of Jan 1996, Nov 1996, Dec 1996, Dec 1998 and some misc of early 2000's. Anyway I have been scouring YouTube for other storms, so far I found some Feb 1989 action. I remember we had quite a bit of snow, and the coverage confirms that with a roof collapse in Everett. As I find more, I will post it. http://youtu.be/vsDWj_ecnY0 Quote Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. Front Ranger
Seattle has uniquely difficult challenges when it comes to dealing with snow. It doesn't snow often or enough usually to warrant a big budget for snow removal, yet when it does snow, the numerous steep hills and elevated roadways can make it very difficult on motorists. I can't really think of another city their size facing those kind of issues. Quote A forum for the end of the world.

There's a reason 2008 got the mayor of Seattle fired, but wasn't as big of a deal in Portland. That was more because Seattle refused to salt the streets in that and had horrible snowplow issues than a topographical statement on the two cities. I'm just not seeing this huge distinction in hilliness here. Both cities have some big hills. Council Crest in Portland is quite a bit higher than any point in Seattle. 1070 feet versus 520 feet. I would say the hilltops in Seattle are generally a little more populated, but they are also lower elevated. Both cities have extremely tough roads to navigate in snow or ice. Yeah, both cities have it tough, for sure. Portland is definitely the closest comparison to the situation Seattle faces. Neither city had the appropriate snow removal budget for Dec 2008. However, there is no doubt that when looking at the dense downtown areas, Seattle's is far hillier. You go from sea level to near 500' pretty quickly in several spots.
