January 2016 in the PNW

What a massive disappointment.  Still haven't seen a flake down here since Feb 2014.  All we got is a crappy layer of very frozen sleet.  Now there's some freezing rain.  Gonna have to scrape off the vehicle and head to the liquor store soon to drink away my sorrows.  :(

You have no right to be disappointed after March 2012, Dec 2013, and Feb 2014.  Eugene has kicked our a$$ lately.

Still very, very light snow here temp 32

It's actually almost to light here now.  The temp is dropping, but we have been warmer than most due to high winds and mixing last night.  Currently 35.

Most recent HRRR run now shows the light snow up here and pretty much washes out the next band developing south of Portland once it gets up into WA tonight.

We royally got the shaft in 2008 in what was probably the biggest event in the northwest since 1969.  I would easily trade March 2012 & Dec 2013 for that action.

Didn't you get a few inches on Dec 14, 2008 though? You also had a good snow event in January 2008 which is winter everyone else on the I-5 corridor got nothing but cold rain and snow mix.

You still betting on the Euro verifying for that heavy precip tonight up near SEA?

I never bet against the ECMWF in the short term.   Just reporting what the HRRR shows.

Yes.  We got about 3 inches on 2 different occasions in Dec, 2008. That's nothing compared to the 18" or so and 2 straight weeks of snow on the ground for pdx though.

The NWS is changing their forecasts up here.  Now they say surface snow level until midnight rising to 500 after midlnight.  1 to 2 inch accumulations for the East Puget Sound lowlands.

Why does anyone worry about what the NWS says?  They are reading the same models that we are reading.   Make up your own mind.

Someone said PDX is at 1 inch right now, not sure how accurate.

Would guess a little over an inch.

About 1.3" here. Still some light snow but starting to taper off.

Airport officially reported 1" of snowfall a couple of hours ago.

I was gonna drip the faucets before going to bed, but the pipes were already frozen.  3 of my friends around here also had frozen pipes.  One of those busted, causing some damage.  Can confirm that it was quite cold, but it only got to -2 at my house.

My coldest day was a 21/2 day. I only had about 1.5" going into that, I was on the very northern edge of the snowfall. If I'd been able to pick up 3-4" I would have probably gone below 0.

I am actually wondering how much moisture we are going to get here. The band to the south seems to mostly be slipping to the east and not making much progress north.

It will start to fill back in here within the next hour or so.

Moderate snow now... Picking up with much bigger flakes. Still warming quick though.

The atmosphere is just mixing up.  It has been mixed here all day and it's actually dropping now due to evaporative cooling.

HRRR indicates this next band will produce much more accumulated precip than the lighter stuff from this morning. Looks like 2PM-5PM is the greatest precip rates. Hopefully we can hold onto the cold air above as long as possible. HRRR shows there is still .3 in+ left in precip.

I got 16.5" in Silverton, but was on the borderline between the warmer and cold air. A lot of days PDX had snow all day we would switch back and forth between heavy snow, rain, sleet, and ZR. Even the morning of the 20th started as rain before switching to snow. Our big snow as on the 22nd when 8" fell.

I say no to that that... the next band will slowly lift north over the Portland area.  Not sure what form it will be in at that time.   But it will get there.

I guess amounts may be decent, but I think the next batch is warm front related while this morning was all about the frontogenesis associated with the goofy vortmax.
