January 2016 in the PNW

Just got back from running errands in Bellevue. It was flurrying there most of the time but as soon as I got back only my hill the snow increased dramatically. Some accumulations but not much so far. Pretty big flakes. Hoping this dry slot sliding in from the south doesn't last too long.

Big fat flakes falling here now in Mountlake Terrace with the bark, benches, and grass starting to turn white.

Pavement is just wet, but is is gorgeous out right now.\

I've been at work, but WOW. It's been snowing HARD here in Snohomish for an hour now, it's sticking to everything except the main roads. This is very awesome and unexpected. Afraid to look at radar to see when it's gonna end.

34 in Estacada, 31-35 in Sandy. Warm nose always moves up the Foothills, every single time. That pisses me off.

Interesting quirk of the local terrain.

I'm hoping that being in Washington County will be in my favor this time around. Still 29 and the next band of precip is inching closer.

HIO still reporting snow. Band has now reached Woodburn so the action should pick up again. Hopefully I can still get mostly snow out of this.

The HIO report is great news for us. We are only about 5-6 miles SE of there as the crow flies.

Sea-Tac temp down to 34 in light snow. Data shows .01 inch, not sure but this could mean a recordable amount of snow which would already top last years total.

Yeah this seems to happen often. Mark Nelsen wrote about this yesterday:

"Models are showing a warm layer (above freezing) pushing north up the valley during the afternoon/evening hours as part of the cold airmass is eroded away west of the Cascades.  I see a signature on the models I’ve seen before with the warm “nose” pushing north into the metro area late in the day mainly east/south sides away from the Columbia River.  So if trends remain the same, snow should change to ice pellets and/or freezing rain first down around Marion County and then into Clackamas County (Silverton/Molalla/Oregon City/Estacada etc..).  The rest of us in the metro area would stay in snow longer…possibly through the entire event. "

Seems that west metro should stay snow.

This is why I prefer cold onshore flow ;)

I do think the snow could hang on longer in Washington/Columbia counties and up in Clark county.

It will be interesting to see what temps do as we head toward the 3-5pm range. Do they stay steady/increasing slowly or do they start slowly dropping a degree or two.

I have a feeling places like Salem and Eugene will be around 33-34 by morning.

Places that keep the gorge wind will probably drop a couple degrees overnight. The east wind is now pretty much gone at PDX.
